Clothing Ribbon Button Repair Guide

Clothing Ribbon Button Replacement Tutorial

Are you tired of dealing with a broken ribbon button on your favorite garment? Look no further This tutorial will guide you through the process of replacing a ribbon button, and with the help of Salvation Repair, you can get your garment looking like new again.

Ribbon button pocket

First, examine the garment where your ribbon button came off. There should be a little pocket where the ribbon came out. Take a closer look and you’ll see the stitching that holds the pocket in place.

Stitch rip the seam

Using a seam ripper, carefully rip the stitches around the little pocket until it is large enough to easily slide the ribbon in. Be careful not to damage the surrounding fabric.

Tuck one end of the ribbon into the pocket

Tuck one end of the ribbon into the pocket, inserting the ribbon past the missing seam. If you are using a ribbon that has an obvious front and back, insert the ribbon so that the back is facing out.

Sew the ribbon in place

Holding the ribbon in place, slide the garment into the sewing machine, aligning the presser foot with the place you want the button to sit. Sew the ribbon in place, making sure to backstitch to hold the stitches in place.

Thread the ribbon through the button

Thread the ribbon through the button, coming up from behind, over the spoke in the middle, and back down through the second hole. Pull the ribbon taught, making sure the button is facing with the backside out.

Fold the button and ribbon back over

Fold the button and ribbon back over, so that the other side of the button is facing out. Leave just enough ribbon to tuck into the little pocket. Clip all excess ribbon.

Sew directly over the seam

Fold the free end of the ribbon, tucking it into the little pocket, in the same manner as the first. Overlap the two ends of the ribbon so that they sit directly on top of one another. Sew directly over the seam, closing the little pocket. This seam should catch both ends of the ribbon between the two layers of the pocket.

And that’s it You’ve successfully replaced your ribbon button. If you’re not comfortable with this process, or if you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry. Salvation Repair is here to help.
