DIY Guide to Fixing Broken Household Lighting Christmas Lights

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 6 Steps

Having a bit of a hassle with your Christmas lights? No worries, we’ve got your back with this handy guide! First things first, make sure those lights are completely unplugged from any outlet before diving into the repair. Common culprits to watch out for include: blown fuses, faulty bulbs, corroded sockets, and iffy wiring. Let’s get those lights twinkling again!

Step 1

– Blown fuses can really put a damper on your holiday lights—especially if the whole string has gone dark. But fear not, they’re super easy to swap out!– Grab the plug and slide the door labeled ‘Open’ in the direction indicated by the arrow. It’s like opening a little present!– Take out the two fuses and check them against a bright backdrop (the sky works wonders). If the fuse is still good, you’ll spot an unbroken strand of wire connecting the two metal contacts.– Time to shine! Replace any blown fuses with shiny new ones and get those lights sparkling again.

Step 2

– Noticing that some lights are playing hard to get? It could be a stubborn bulb or a sneaky connection issue between the bulb and the socket.– Carefully give each bulb a gentle tug and pull it from the socket. Take a moment to check it out and make sure those copper leads are where they should be—no twists or missing pieces allowed!– Keep going through each bulb that’s not lighting up until you uncover the troublemaker(s). Swap out the bulbs as needed, and you’ll be back in business!

Step 3

– Feel free to grab a Light Keeper Pro or a similar continuity tester to help you find those sneaky burnt-out bulbs.

Step 4

– Over time, the connections inside the socket might get a bit rusty or collect some dust bunnies. This can stop the bulb from making a solid connection with the socket, which usually means no light for you.– Grab a small file or a scratch brush and give those wire contacts a good cleaning. Let’s make them shine!– Once your socket is all cleaned up, pop in a brand-new bulb and light up your life!

Step 5

– If you’re still having trouble, it might be time to face the music – the bulb socket could be beyond saving. No worries, though! Taking it out is a breeze and will get your lights shining bright again!– Grab those wire cutters and snip away the faulty socket from the light strand. You’ll be back in action in no time!

Step 6

– Give about 1/2″ of insulation a little haircut from both wires. Snip snip!– Now, twist those wires together like they’re best friends and pop them into the twist-on wire connector. Give that connector a good twist or two until it feels snug, and you can give it a gentle tug without it waving goodbye.– Once you’ve tested the lights and confirmed that the troublesome socket is now a thing of the past, think about adding a dab of silicone sealant (or museum wax) into the cap. This will help keep moisture at bay and stop those wires from getting all rusty and corroded.
