How To Fix Purse Strap Apparel

Purse Strap Replacement Tutorial

Is your favorite purse’s strap broken or worn out? Don’t worry, replacing it is easier than you think! With a few simple steps and some basic sewing skills, you can give your purse a brand new look. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through the process of replacing a purse strap, and by the end of it, you’ll be a pro!

Purse Strap Replacement Tutorial

Step 1: Choose Your Strap

Select a replacement strap or a long, thin piece of fabric that you want to use for your purse strap. Make sure it’s the correct length for your carrying preference, whether it’s crossbody, one-shoulder, or crook of the elbow. Measurements will vary depending on your preference, so take your time to get it right.

Measuring the Strap

Step 2: Prepare the Strap

Put the strap through the handle attachments and fold the end over. There should be about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of room for sewing. Make sure there’s enough strap between each handle attachment for you to carry the bag comfortably.

Step 3: Sew the Strap

Thread your needle with your preferred colored thread (we used black). Fold the strap so there’s a half-inch between the stitching line and the handle attachment. Start sewing on one edge and push the needle through both pieces of strap. Repeat this process until you’ve sewn a stitch across the entire width of the strap.

Step 4: Lock the Stitch

After reaching the opposite end, pull the needle through, bringing up as much excess thread as it allows. Tie a knot at the end, keeping the knot close to the base of the thread. Repeat this process until you believe the knot is strong enough to hold. Then, sew backwards on top of the existing seams for a locking stitch.

Step 5: Repeat and Finish

Repeat steps 3-4 on the opposite handle attachment. Once you’ve completed both sides, your purse strap should be securely attached. Cut any excess thread, and you’re done!
