iBook G3 Clamshell DC-In Board Replacement

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 34 Steps

Oops! Did you trip over your power cord? Don't worry, you won't have to swap out the whole logic board.

Step 1

- Grab a coin and give those battery locking screws a gentle twist to the left—just 90 degrees will do the trick!

- Now, it’s time to pop off that battery cover and reveal the magic inside.

- To free the battery from its cozy home, just pull up on the handy plastic tab. Easy peasy!

Tools Used
  1. Coin

Step 2

- Gently pull those keyboard release tabs toward you and lift the keyboard until it pops right out! Just a heads-up, the keyboard ribbon is still hanging out with the logic board, so you won't be able to fully remove the keyboard just yet.

- If the keyboard is playing hard to get, grab a small flathead screwdriver and give that keyboard locking screw (located between the F4 and F5 keys) a little twist, turning it 180 degrees in either direction. Give it another go!

- Now, carefully rotate the keyboard away from the screen and let it rest face-down on the trackpad area. You're doing great!

Step 3

- Grab that nifty clear plastic tab on the airport card and give it a gentle tug upward and in the direction of the display. You've got this!

Step 4

- Grip the airport card in one hand and with your other hand, gently detach the antenna cable.

Step 5

- Time to get those Phillips screws out! Unscrew the two that are holding the RAM shield in place. You've got this!

Step 6

- Grab that metal bracket chillin' on top of the RAM shield and give it a gentle tug upwards to pop that shield off.

Step 7

- Gently lift the keyboard connector cable using its clear plastic loop. You've got this!

Step 8

- Grab a straightened paperclip and gently pop that CD-ROM tray out like a pro!

Step 9

- Flip your device over so the bottom is showing its face.

- Now, let's get those Torx screws out of the way:

- Unscrew the four short T8 Torx screws located near the battery compartment.

- Next up, tackle the two long T8 Torx screws found near the hinges.

Step 10

- Gently slide the CD-ROM drive tray out just a bit, like a little secret reveal.

- Take out that shiny silver Phillips screw from the plastic casing with a smile!

Step 11

- Flip your computer over like a pancake!

- Unscrew those three Phillips screws to get the party started.

Step 12

- 1) Use those nifty fingernails of yours to grab the locking bar on either side and gently lift it up just a smidge (around 1/16" or 2 mm).

- 2) Once the locking bar is free, smoothly slide the cable out of the connector like a pro.

Step 13

- Time to get started - gently pry the top piece of the trackpad clamp up, and you'll be able to free the trackpad ribbon.

- Now, carefully slide that orange trackpad ribbon out of the clamp. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 14

- Gently nudge the rim of the lower case outward and lift the upper case by grabbing it just to the left of the optical drive. You've got this!

- Now, let's repeat that move on the upper left corner of the upper case. Just grab the bottom left corner and lift up. Easy peasy!

Step 15

- Unplug the audio cable and give it a little wave goodbye!

Step 16

- Hold the upper case on both sides of the keyboard area and gently lift it up and away from the screen.

Step 17

- First things first! If the optical drive isn't feeling generous and won't open on its own, grab a straightened paperclip and give it a little nudge to pop it open. You're almost there!

- Next up, let's tackle that pesky 5 mm standoff. Time to remove it and keep moving forward!

Step 18

- Unplug the optical drive cable from the logic board. It's like giving your device a little break!

Step 19

- Give the optical drive a little lift while gently nudging those tiny plastic tabs toward the screen, one by one, to liberate one side of the drive.

- Once you’ve got that side free, lift it up and slide the drive out, away from the screen like a pro.

- When it’s time to pop the optical drive back in, make sure the drive tray is pulled out just enough to sneak under the lower casing rim.

Step 20

- Let's kick things off by loosening up those Phillips screws! Start by removing the following ones:

- Next up, gently take out the EMI fingers.

- Now, grab the longer Phillips screw chilling in the middle-rear of the modem shield and give it a twist to remove it.

- Time to tackle those three identical Phillips screws! There are two on either side of the EMI fingers, plus one more waiting for you on the right side of the modem shield.

- Finally, don't forget to remove the larger Phillips screw that's holding those EMI fingers tight to the modem board.

Step 21

- Gently peel the modem shield away from the metal framework underneath, starting from the right front and gliding your way to the left.

Step 22

- Unscrew that Phillips screw hanging out on the left side of the modem. It’s time for a little twist!

- Gently lift the right side of the modem up. Think of it as giving your device a friendly little nudge.

Step 23

- Gently lift the modem just a bit and unplug the cable on the left side. You've got this!

Step 24

- Unscrew the Phillips screw nestled in the left hinge, and give it a gentle twist.

- Carefully peel back the airport cable that's hiding under the cheerful yellow tape.

Step 25

- Unplug the big display data cable from the logic board and gently navigate it away from the plastic and metal tabs.

Step 26

- Gently unplug the backlight cable from the logic board and guide it out of the way.

Step 27

- Let's get started by carefully removing the three tiny Phillips screws from the clutch cover. You've got this!

Step 28

- Alright, here’s the deal! With one hand, gently support the display while you unscrew that last Phillips screw from the right hinge. Just a little nudge down on the display will help avoid any pressure on that stubborn screw.

- Now, it’s time to say goodbye to the display assembly. Go ahead and remove it!

- When you’re putting the display assembly back in place, don’t forget to let the clutch cover dance over those white plastic tabs sticking out from the rear underside of your laptop. It’s a perfect fit!

Step 29

- Unscrew those two tiny Phillips screws holding down the RJ-11 board and let’s get this party started!

Step 30

- Gently nudge the lower case rim to pop it out, then smoothly slide the RJ-11 board out of your computer like a pro!

Step 31

- Gently guide that speaker cable away from the metal frame and give it a little break by disconnecting it from the logic board. You've got this!

Step 32

- First up, we've got six screws to tackle (if your iBook is Firewire-free, don’t worry about the screw highlighted in orange):

- Start by locating the two short, flat-headed Phillips screws hanging out near the battery compartment.

- Next, keep an eye out for a short, round-headed Phillips screw chilling near the speaker cable connector. (Some models have this little guy, while others, especially the older ones, might not.)

- Then, find a short, flat-headed Phillips screw tucked between the ethernet and USB ports.

- Don’t forget the short, flat-headed Phillips screw to the left of that hole-y area (yes, it’s amusing!).

- Finally, look for a long, round-headed Phillips screw near the power receptacle.

Step 33

- Gently lift the right side of the EMI shield and slide it out from your computer. You've got this!

Step 34

- Gently press down on the logic board while sliding the DC-In board upwards from its connectors and then to the left. Keep it smooth and steady!
