iPhone 5c – Replacing the screen

Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 16 Steps

Welcome to our guide on swapping out that pesky display unit on your iPhone 5c! If you're dealing with a cracked glass, a touchscreen that’s gone rogue, or an LCD that’s as dark as a black hole, you’ve come to the right place. We're here to help you get your device back in action with a brand new display. Let’s dive in and get that screen shining again!

Step 1

- Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver – it's time to pop open that iPhone 5c!

- Now, let’s get those two pentalobe screws out from the bottom of the enclosure. They’re hanging out right next to the Lightning connector, one on the left and one on the right. Make sure to store them in the same compartment of your organizer tray – we wouldn’t want them to play hide and seek! 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws

Step 2

- Lay your iPhone 5c gently on a soft, clean surface to keep that back from getting scratched. We want it to look sharp!

- To get that front panel lifted, grab a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If your screen is looking like a jigsaw puzzle, cover it with packing tape first.

- Position the suction cup over the Home button (if you can) or right next to it (check out figure 1). While you’re lifting the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic pick between the plastic frame and the display frame and press down on the plastic frame. You might need to give it a few tries to get it just right (see figure 2).

- Once you can lift the screen a few millimeters (see figure 3), start carefully working your way around the edges until it’s loosened on both sides (see figure 4).

Step 3

- First, let's tackle those four Phillips screws from the silver cover (check out figure 1). Store them in the same compartment of your organizer tray so they don't play hide and seek! Then, gently lift off the cover to say goodbye to it. You'll need: 1 x 3.2 mm Phillips screw (not magnetic), 2 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw.

- Next up, it's time to disconnect the three connectors (see figure 2). Be super careful here! Use the pointed tip of your spudger and gently lift it just below the contact. We're disconnecting the touchscreen, LCD, and front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone.

- Now, let’s test that shiny new display! Temporarily connect the new display assembly and fire up your iPhone. Check if the LCD and touchscreen are working like a charm. Ensure all connectors are snugly plugged in. If they’re not, your display might stay black or show some funky stripes. If you notice a slight yellow tint, don’t worry, just check the last step in this guide.

- Remember to temporarily connect that new display assembly again.

- Once more, start your iPhone and make sure everything is in tip-top shape with the LCD and touchscreen. If things aren’t connecting just right, you might see a black screen or stripes.

- And if that display is looking a little yellow, just refer to the last step in this guide.

Step 4

- The earpiece is nestled on the back of the display unit. Start by unscrewing those two Phillips screws from the cover of the earpiece (check out figure 1) and toss them into the same compartment of your organizer tray. You’ll need: 1 x 4.0 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw.

- Next, let’s get that cover off! It’s got hooks holding it in place in two spots. Gently unhook one side and lift out the cover. Don’t forget to toss it in the same container with the screws you just removed (see figure 2).

- Now, let’s reveal the earpiece (see figure 3) so you can easily pop it out with your fingers.

Step 5

- Let's get that cable set off! It's just a bit glued to the sensors, so gently coax it away with your trusty laboratory spatula (check out figure 1).

- Now, with a little finesse, you can lift the cable set using your fingers. Fold it so the camera is perched over the rear panel (see figure 2). No need to worry about the heat shield; it can stay put!

Step 6

- Alright, let’s tackle those six Phillips screws that are keeping the metal cover snug and secure (check out figure 1). You'll need: 1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw, 4 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.6 mm Phillips screw (smooth head).

Step 7

- Start by removing those two identical Phillips screws (check out figure 1). Once they're out, gently lift off the silver cover. Don't forget to stash everything in the same compartment of your organizer tray – organization is key! 2 x 1.4 mm Phillips screws

- Now, grab your trusty laboratory spatula and carefully slide the pointed tip underneath the cable set, which is usually glued down, to free it (see figure 2).

- The Home button is stuck to the screen from the inside. Use your spudger to carefully peel off the rubber coating to avoid any scratches on the inner screen (see figure 3). You can also give the Home button a gentle press from the front side.

- Once the cable set is free, you can lift it out with ease.

Step 8

- Not every display you find will come with the same bells and whistles. If needed, you might want to rescue a few parts from your old display before you welcome the new screen into your life (check out figure 1): Front camera bracket (it's just a little glued down), Sensor bracket (also lightly glued).

- Front camera bracket (it’s just a tad glued down).

- Sensor bracket (yep, lightly glued too).

- And hey, don’t forget to snag that sticker from your old display!

Step 9

- Time to bring back the Home button! Just pop it back into place (check out figure 1) and ensure it’s sitting pretty and level on the other side.

- Next up, reconnect the cable set and secure it with those screws (see figure 2). You’ll need 2 x 1.4 mm Phillips screws for this little task.

Step 10

- Now place the silver rear panel on the back of the new display and screw it in place (see figure 1).1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw4 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws1 x 1.6 mm Phillips screw (smooth head)

Step 11

- First, slide that ambient microphone into its cozy little black groove (check out figure 1).

- Next, let's get the front camera and the sensor snugly attached to their respective brackets (see figure 2). Remember, it's crucial to place those sensors just right; otherwise, the proximity sensor might decide to take a nap and not work like it should!

Step 12

- Reposition the earpiece back to where it belongs (check out figure 1). Next, snap the cover back on (see figure 2).

- Now, tighten those Phillips screws (see figure 3). Make sure the front camera is perfectly centered on the display. Adjust it a bit if needed. You'll be using 1 x 4.0 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw.

Step 13

- Reconnect those connectors (check out figure 1). Sometimes the touchscreen connector likes to play hide and seek when you connect the LCD connector. Just a heads up: we're dealing with the Touchscreen, LCD, Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone here!

- Once everything is snug, fire up your iPhone! Check that the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece are all functioning like a charm. If the connectors are misbehaving, you might see some stripes on the display or find parts of the touchscreen not responding.

- Now, let’s put the cover back on and secure it with screws (see figure 2). You’ll need: 1 x 3.2 mm Phillips screw (not magnetic), 2 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw.

Step 14

- Now, let's gently fold down that screen. Make sure the top edge, where all those cables are hanging out, clicks into place just right. Then, with a little bit of care, push the screen towards the Home button until it snugly fits into the frame. You've got this!

Step 15

- Alright, it’s time to fasten those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure! These little guys are 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws, so make sure they’re snug and secure!
