iPhone 5s – Replacing the battery

Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 19 Steps

Ready to tackle that pesky battery issue on your iPhone 5s? In this guide, we'll walk you through replacing that troublesome battery all by yourself! This fix is perfect if your iPhone is throwing a fit during heavy use, refusing to charge, or just not turning on at all. Say goodbye to low battery blues and hello to a fully charged phone! Let’s get started and bring your iPhone back to life!

Step 1

- Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver because it’s time to pop open that iPhone 5s!

- Next, let’s tackle those two pentalobe screws chilling at the bottom of the enclosure—one on the right and one on the left of the Lightning connector. Be sure to keep them safe in the same compartment of your organizer tray. You’ll need 2 x 4.0 mm pentalobe screws for this adventure!

Step 2

- Place your iPhone 5s on a cozy, clean surface to keep that back safe from scratches.

- To lift the front panel, grab a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If the screen is really cracked, don’t fret—just cover it with packing tape for a smoother lift.

- Position the suction cup over the Home button (if you can) or just beside it (check out figure 1). While gently pulling up the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display frame, and give a little press down on the aluminum frame. Use the pick to help lift the screen as well (see figure 2). It might take a few tries, but you’ve got this!

- Once you can lift the screen a couple of millimeters (see figure 3), work your way around the edges gently until it’s loosened on both sides (see figure 4).

Step 3

- First, let's get that shiny silver cover off the Home button connector! Use the pointed tip of your spudger to gently lift it out from just below the cover (check out figure 1 for guidance).

- Next up, it's time to disconnect the contact from the connector. Carefully pull it off with your trusty laboratory spatula or spudger—easy does it!

- Once you've successfully disconnected the cable, you can lift the display at the Home button. Just a heads up, the LCD/touchscreen cables are still connected to the logic board, so hang tight for the next step!

Step 4

- First remove the four Phillips screws from the silver cover (see figure 1). Put the screws in the same compartment of your organizer tray. Then lift the cover to remove it.1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screws (not magnetic)2 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw

- Disconnect the following three connectors (see figure 2). Be very careful. Place the pointed tip of the spudger very slightly below the contact and lift it up.TouchscreenLCDFront camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone

Step 5

- Grab your Phillips screwdriver and let's get those Phillips screws off the battery connector (check out figure 1 for a visual!). Once that's done, gently lift the cover with your spudger (see figure 2). Don't forget to stash all the parts in the same compartment of your organizer tray—keeping things neat is key! You’ll need 2 x 1.6 mm Phillips screws for this part.

- Next, let's be super careful and lift the battery connector! Just slide the pointed tip of your spudger a little below the connector (see figure 3). If you don’t have a spudger handy, your fingernail can work too. You've got this!

Step 6

- Gently detach the antenna connector with your trusty laboratory spatula or spudger—no need to rush, just take it easy!

- Now, let’s disconnect the Lightning connector’s ribbon cable! Just slide the flat end of the spudger a tad below the contact and lift it up with a gentle touch. Once you've done that, carefully fold the cable over like a pro!

Step 7

- Alright, it's time to tackle those seven Phillips screws! Make sure to stash them in different compartments of your organizer tray so you can easily find them later. Here’s what you’ll be dealing with: 1 x 3.0 mm Phillips screw (smooth head), 2 x 3.5 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 2 x 2.9 mm Phillips screws. You've got this!

Step 8

- Now, gently lift that speaker just like shown in figure 1!

- You'll notice a little bit of the speaker is nestled under the logic board. Just give it a little twist to one side to free it up (check out figure 2 for a visual).

- And there you go! Just pull it out by hand.

Step 9

- Grab your spatula or spudger to gently wiggle free the headphone jack (check out figure 1), the microphone (see figure 2), and the Lightning connector (figure 3).

- Slide that laboratory spatula beneath the ribbon cable and carefully peel it away from the base. It's only stuck down where the speaker used to be (see figure 4).

- Now, with a little finesse, use your fingers to delicately pull away the ribbon cable (see figure 5).

Step 10

- Gently lift the black end of the sticker, and then grab a pair of scissors to make a snip right down the middle (check out figures 1 to 3 for a visual!).

- Now, slowly pull one half of the adhesive strip to the side. Keep those strips as flat as you can at the level of the iPhone (see figure 4). Do the same for the other half, and then you can go ahead and remove the battery (see figure 5).

Step 11

- First up, let's stick on those new adhesive strips! Give them a good press onto the back cover before peeling off the film (check out figures 1 and 2 for some visual help!).

- Next, it's time to pop that battery back into your iPhone (see figure 3 for guidance).

- Finally, give that black tear-off strip a little fold in the middle. You're doing great!

Step 12

- Alright, it's time to slide in that Lightning connector (check out figure 1 for a visual!).

- Next, gently nudge the microphone’s rubber seal into its cozy little black groove and make sure the Lightning connector and audio jack are snug against the frame (see figure 2). Once that's all set, go ahead and reconnect the ribbon cable!

Step 13

- First, give that speaker a gentle nudge to the side and slide it back into its cozy original spot. Make sure it’s seated just right (check out figure 1 for a visual!).

- Next up, let's get those Phillips screws back in action (figure 2). Here’s what you’ll need: 1 x 3.0 mm Phillips screw (smooth head), 2 x 3.5 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 2 x 2.9 mm Phillips screws. You’ve got this!

- Finally, reconnect the antenna cable (figure 3) and the ribbon cable to wrap things up.

Step 14

- First, let's reconnect that battery connector—easy peasy (check out figure 1 for a visual!).

- Next up, pop on the cover and secure it with those screws (see figure 2). You’ll need 2 x 1.6 mm Phillips screws for this final touch!

Step 15

- Reconnect those connectors (check out figure 1)! Sometimes the touchscreen connector likes to play hide and seek when you're connecting the LCD connector. Just a friendly reminder: Touchscreen, LCD, Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone are all in this together!

- Once everything is snug and secure, fire up your iPhone! Give the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece a little test. If something's off, you might see some funky stripes on your display or parts of the touchscreen might just decide to take a break.

- Now, let’s wrap things up! Attach the cover and screw it in place (see figure 2). You’ll need: 1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw (not magnetic), 2 x 1.2 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.7 mm Phillips screw (magnetic).

Step 16

- Alright, this part can be a bit tricky! Grab your tweezers or spudger to position that cable set’s connector just right. Once it's lined up, use the spudger to gently press it onto the connection (check out figure 1 for a visual guide!).

- If everything clicks into place nicely, pop that silver cover over the connector. Tweezers make this step a breeze (see figure 2). With your spudger, give the cover a gentle press until you hear that satisfying click (see figure 3).

Step 17

- Now, gently fold down that screen like a pro! Make sure the top edge, where all those cables hang out, clicks into place just right. Then, with a careful nudge, slide the screen toward the Home button until it's snugly fitted into the frame. You're doing awesome!

Step 18

- Alright, let’s get those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure back in place! You’ll need 2 x 4.0 mm pentalobe screws for this step. Just a little twist and you’re golden!

Step 19

- Synchronize your iPhone with iTunes or connect to a WLAN network and wait until the time is set.

- Remove the SIM tray with the SIM card and reinsert it.

- Activate airplane mode on the device and then deactivate airplane mode.
