Steps: 21 Steps

Ready to tackle that volume control cable? In this guide, we're here to help you swap out your iPhone 6’s faulty volume control cable all by yourself! If your volume buttons are feeling a bit lazy or lack that satisfying click, it’s time for a little DIY magic. Join us as we walk you through each step of the process with ease and confidence. And remember, if you ever feel overwhelmed, you can always schedule a repair with us!

Step 1

- Completely power down your iPhone 6 to keep it safe during the repair process.

- Hold down the standby button for about three seconds until the slider pops up.

- Swipe it to fully turn off your iPhone. This may take around ten seconds.

Step 2

- To open the iPhone 6 you should use a pentalobe screwdriver.

- On the lower side of the body you will find two Pentalobe screws. They are located left and right of the Lightning connector. Remove them and place them in one square on your magnetic pad.2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screw

Step 3

- Gently place your iPhone 6 on a soft, clean surface to keep that back cover looking sharp and scratch-free!

- Grab a suction cup and a sturdy plastic plectrum to lift the front screen of your iPhone 6. If your screen is looking a bit like a shattered puzzle, make sure to tape it up before lifting. This will help keep those pesky glass splinters at bay!

- Stick the suction cup on the display, ideally right above the Home button, or just next to it (check out figure 1). Use the suction cup’s ring to lift the screen while you slide the plectrum between the aluminum and display frame, gently pushing down the aluminum frame. This little dance will help you lift the screen with the plectrum (see figure 2). Patience is key here – you might need to give it a few tries!

- Once you've managed to lift the display a bit, carefully work your way around the edges until both long sides are free (see figure 3).

Step 4

- Grab your trusty Phillips screwdriver and start unscrewing those Phillips screws holding the battery connector in place (check out figure 1 for a visual). Once you've done that, lift off the cover (see figure 2) and toss all those parts into one container to keep things tidy. You've got a 3.2 mm Phillips screw and a 2.3 mm Phillips screw to deal with.

- Now it's time to gently remove the battery connector. For this, take the sharp end of your ESD spudger and carefully slide it under the plug (see figure 3). No spudger? No problem! You can also give it a go with your fingernail. Just be gentle, and you'll be golden!

Step 5

- The shiny silver cover is held in place by five Phillips screws. Time to show them who's boss! Remove those screws (check out figure 1) and safely stash them in one section of your magnetic pad. Once you’ve done that, you can lift off the cover. You’ve got 1 x 3.1 mm Phillips screw, 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw in play here.

- Now, feast your eyes on four overlapping connectors (see picture 2). Carefully loosen them in the order shown below. Use the pointy end of your spudger to gently slide under the contact and give it a little lift. We’re talking about the Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, LCD, and Touchscreen.

Step 6

- Unscrew the two little screws that hold the vibration motor in place (check out figure 1). They’re 2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screws, so be sure to keep them safe!

- Once those screws are out, feel free to lift the vibration motor right out (see figure 2). You're doing great!

Step 7

- The battery is snugly held in place by two adhesive strips. Use your trusty spatula to gently loosen the black ends of these strips from the battery (check out figure 1 for a visual).

- Next, it's time to peel off those adhesive strips. Take your time and keep them as flat as possible, right at the height of your iPhone (see figures 2 and 3 for guidance).

- Finally, lift that battery out of your iPhone 6 and give yourself a pat on the back!

Step 8

- To kick things off, unscrew those two Phillips screws from the shiny silver cover (check out figure 1 for guidance). Toss both screws into a container to keep them safe and sound. Once that's done, gently lift off the cover to reveal the magic inside (see figure 2). You've got 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw in play here!

Step 9

- Alright, let's get that Wi-Fi cover off! Start by unscrewing those four Phillips screws holding it down (check out figure 1 for a little visual aid). Make sure to toss those screws into the same container to keep them safe and sound. Once that's done, gently lift the cover off to reveal what's underneath (see figure 2). You've got 2 x 2.1 mm Phillips screws, 1 x 1.3 mm Phillips screw, and 1 x 1.6 mm Phillips screw in play here!

Step 10

- Time to disconnect that volume control cable connector! Just give it a little tug and you're on your way (see figure 1).

Step 11

- Start by removing the three Phillips screws that are keeping the volume control cable snug in its spot using your trusty Phillips screwdriver (check out figure 1 for a visual). Now, due to the logic board's position, you can only loosen the screw on the right in the turquoise circle (see figure 2), but it won't come out just yet. You'll get to that little guy when you take out the cable set. We're dealing with 2 x 2.2 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw here.

- Next, grab your laboratory spatula and gently slide it under the ribbon cable to detach it from the base (see figure 3). Easy does it!

- Finally, remove the volume control cable along with that screw we talked about earlier (see figure 4). If that screw is being a little stubborn, you might need to remove the logic board first. No worries, just check out our guide on how to tackle that!

Step 12

- First, place the shiny new volume control cable back in its cozy spot and secure it with those three Phillips screws (check out figure 1 for a visual!). Remember to be super gentle when you're tightening that 1.8 mm Phillips screw; we don’t want to strip any threads! If you find that pesky screw on the far right (see figure 2) is playing hard to get, you might have to take out the logic board to get it sorted.

- Once that’s all set, go ahead and connect the volume control cable to the logic board, and you’re golden!

Step 13

- Now it's time to pop that Wi-Fi cover back on and secure it with some screws (check out figure 1 for guidance). You've got a couple of 2.1 mm Phillips screws, a 1.3 mm Phillips screw, and a 1.6 mm Phillips screw to keep everything snug and secure!

Step 14

- It's time to pop that shiny silver cover back on! Just align it (check out figure 1) and secure it with the two Phillips screws (see figure 2). You're almost there!

Step 15

- First, let's get those new adhesive strips on the bottom of the battery so it stays put like a pro in the future.

- Now, pop that battery into your iPhone, but hold off on connecting it just yet to keep things safe and sound from any short circuit surprises.

Step 16

- Carefully place the vibration motor back in its cozy spot (check out figure 1).

- Secure it with the right screws to keep everything snug (see figure 2). You’ll need 2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screws for this job!

Step 17

- Let's get that LCD connector attached (check out figure 1). It might take a few tries, and that's totally okay! Just remember to be super careful so you don’t bend the plug. We’re talking about the Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, LCD, and Touchscreen.

- Once everything is connected securely, it’s time to power up your iPhone 6! Run some quick tests to check if the LCD, touch screen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earcup are all working like champs. If you spot any streaks on the display or if the touchscreen is acting a bit funky, it could mean the connectors aren’t snug enough.

- Now, cover those connectors up and secure everything with the five screws (see figure 2). You’ll need 1 x 3.1 mm Phillips screw, 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw.

Step 18

- Alright, let's get that battery back in action! Connect it just like before and make sure it's snug.

- Now, grab that shiny silver cover and slide it back into place. Secure it with the screws: 1 x 3.2 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.3 mm Phillips screw. You're doing great!

Step 19

- You're almost at the finish line! Gently slide the display back into its cozy home. Just watch out for any cables that might get pinched, and give that top edge a little push until you hear it click into place.

- Now, with a little finesse, nudge your screen toward the home button so it fits snugly in the frame. You're doing awesome!

Step 20

- Grab those last remaining Pentalobe screws and snugly fit them into the lower side of the body. You're working with 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws here, so make sure they're in nice and tight!
