iPhone 6s – Replacing the earpiece

Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 11 Steps

In this guide, we'll help you swap out that faulty earpiece on your iPhone 6s. If you're struggling to hear your friend on the other end of the line or if the call sounds like a whisper, it's time for this repair. Let's get that audio back to normal!

Step 1

- Before diving into the repair, let's make sure your iPhone is powered down to keep it safe and sound. Just press that standby button for about three seconds until you see the slider pop up on your screen.

- Give that slider a swipe from left to right, and voilà! Your iPhone will gracefully shut down in about 10 seconds.

Step 2

- To kickstart your iPhone 6s opening adventure, grab a pentalobe screwdriver!

- Next, let's tackle those two pentalobe screws located on either side of the lightning connector. A little tip: use a magnetic pad to keep those screws organized, just like they were in your phone. You'll be working with two 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws.

Step 3

- First, let's give your iPhone 6s a cozy spot on a soft, clean surface to keep that back from getting scratched.

- Grab a suction cup and gently lift the front panel while you have a hard plastic plectrum and a hot-air gun ready. If your screen is looking a bit worse for wear, cover it with some adhesive tape to keep things tidy before moving on.

- The screen is just a bit stuck to the frame. Warm up those outer edges of the display with your hot-air gun to around 60°C (140°F).

- Position the suction cup over or beside the home button. While you lift the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic plectrum between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Give it a little push to press down the aluminum frame and lift the display. You might need to try this a few times!

- Once you can lift the screen a few millimeters, slide the plectrum carefully along the outer edges until the display is loose on both sides. If it’s still feeling a bit stubborn, don’t hesitate to give those edges a little more heat.

Step 4

- First, let's tackle those Phillips screws and the plug cover that keep the battery plug snug as a bug. Once you've removed them, toss those little guys onto a magnetic pad so they don't go wandering off—trust us, future-you will thank present-you for this smart move! You'll be dealing with 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw.

- Now, it's time to gently coax that battery plug out of its cozy home. You can use an ESD spudger to slide underneath, but if you're in a pinch, your fingernail will do the trick too. Just be gentle, and you'll be on your way!

Step 5

- First, let's loosen those four Phillips screws holding down the silver contact cover. Once they're free, pop them onto your magnetic pad along with the cover so they don't go on an adventure without you! You'll be dealing with 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw.

- Now, it's time to gently release the three overlapping display connectors in the order shown below. Just slide your trusty spudger under each connector and lift it up with care. You've got this! The connectors are for the front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, and the display.

Step 6

- You'll spot the earpiece nestled at the top edge of the display. Start by removing the three Phillips screws from the earpiece cover and place them on your magnetic pad to keep them safe. You'll be working with 2 x 2.2 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw.

- Next up, gently peel off the earpiece cover, which is still holding on tight with an adhesive strip. Don't forget to keep it with the screws you just removed!

- The earpiece is hiding just beneath the front camera's ribbon cable. To free it, simply nudge the cable a bit to the side.

Step 7

- Reinsert the earpiece into its cozy spot nestled between the FaceTime camera and the sensors. Next, place the cover plate back on and reapply that adhesive strip like a pro.

- Tighten those Phillips screws up! Ensure the front camera is perfectly centered on the display. If it needs a little nudge, give it a gentle push. You'll be using 2 x 2.2 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 1.8 mm Phillips screw.

Step 8

- First up, let's plug in those display connectors! It might take a few tries, so don't stress if it feels tricky. Just be gentle to avoid bending them. We're talking about the front camera, sensor, earpiece, ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, and the display itself.

- Once everything's connected snugly, power up your iPhone and check that all systems are go! Make sure the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece are working like a charm. If you see some funky stripes or parts of the touchscreen are acting up, it might mean those connectors need a little more love!

- Now, let's wrap things up by putting that connector cover back on and securing it tight with those screws. You’ll need 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw. You're almost there!

Step 9

- Time to connect that battery back! Just snap the battery connector into place and make sure it’s snug.

- Now, grab that shiny silver cover plate and set it back on top. Secure it with those screws—1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw will do the trick!

Step 10

- Now, let's get those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure all snug and secure! You’ll be working with 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws, so twist them in tight and give your iPhone a solid finish!

Step 11

- Gently lower the display back into place. Ensure that the upper edge, where the cables are connected, clicks in securely. Now, with a little care, press down the display towards the home button along the edge until it fits snugly into the frame.
