iPhone 6s – Replacing the volume control cable

Duration: 105 min.
Steps: 29 Steps

Welcome to your DIY adventure! In this guide, we're diving into the world of iPhone 6s repairs, specifically tackling that pesky volume control cable. If your standby button feels like it's taking a nap or the mute and volume buttons are playing hide and seek, it's time for a little fix. Don't worry, we've got your back every step of the way! So grab your tools and let's get to work—your iPhone will thank you later! If you need a hand, feel free to schedule a repair.

Step 1

- Before we dive into the repair, let's make sure your iPhone is off to keep it safe and sound! Just press that standby button for about three seconds until you see the slider pop up on your screen.

- Now, give that slider a friendly swipe from left to right. In about 10 seconds, your iPhone will be powered down and ready for its makeover!

Step 2

- Ready to crack open that iPhone 6s? Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver!

- Now, let's tackle those two pentalobe screws flanking the lightning connector. To keep things organized, we suggest using a magnetic pad to hold onto those little screws, just like they were snug in your phone before. We're talking about those .2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws!

Step 3

- Place your iPhone 6s on a soft, clean surface to keep its back scratch-free.

- Grab a suction cup to gently lift the front panel, along with a hard plastic plectrum and a hot-air gun. If your screen is looking a bit worse for wear, wrap it up in some adhesive tape before you proceed.

- The screen is a bit stuck to the frame. Use the hot-air gun to warm up the outer edges of the display to around 60°C (140°F).

- Position the suction cup over the home button or right next to it. As you lift the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic plectrum between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Press down on the aluminum frame while gently pushing up the display with the plectrum. This might take a few tries, so don’t stress!

- Once you can lift the screen a few millimeters, carefully slide along the outer edges until the display is free on both sides. If needed, give those outer edges a little warmth a few times to help out.

Step 4

- Let's start by taking out those Phillips screws and the plug cover that keep the battery plug snug as a bug! Make sure to toss those little parts onto your magnetic pad so they don’t play hide and seek later. We’re talking about a 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw and a 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw.

- Next up, gently coax out the battery plug by sliding an ESD spudger underneath it. Don’t have a spudger? No worries! Your trusty fingernail can do the trick too. Just be careful!

Step 5

- First, let's loosen those four Phillips screws on the shiny contact cover. Gather those screws and the cover together in a cozy spot on your magnetic pad so they don’t go wandering off later. We're talking about 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw!

- Next up, it's time to release those three display connectors that are overlapping like a game of Tetris. Just slide your spudger under each connector and lift it up gently, following the order below: Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, and the Display. You’ve got this!

Step 6

- Time to unscrew those two Phillips screws holding the taptic engine in place—think of them as the tiny guards of your device! We're talking about 2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screws here.

- Now that those screws are out of the way, you can gently lift out the taptic engine like a pro!

Step 7

- Alright, let's get that battery out! It's stuck in there with two adhesive strips, but don't worry, you can use some tweezers or a spatula to help you out.

- Now, take your time and gently pull those adhesive strips away from under the battery. Keep them as flat as possible while you do this to avoid any tearing—nobody wants that!

- Once those adhesive strips are free, just lift out the battery like it's a piece of cake!

Step 8

- Ready to free that SIM card tray? Grab your trusty SIM tool or a good old paperclip. Just give that tool a little push into the tiny hole on the SIM tray, and voilà! It should pop right out!

Step 9

- First, let's tackle those two Phillips screws holding the camera cover in place—one's a 2.0 mm and the other's a 1.6 mm. Grab your screwdriver and get to work!

- Next up, it's time to unplug the camera connector. Just slide your spudger under it and give it a gentle lift. Easy peasy!

- Now, you can carefully remove the camera from your iPhone. Just a heads up! That silver cover is lightly glued to the camera, so handle it with care!

Step 10

- First, let's loosen those two Phillips screws keeping that shiny connector cover snug as a bug—2 x 2.3 mm Phillips screws, to be exact!

- Next, lift off that cover and set it down with the screws on your trusty magnetic pad—keeping everything together like a good team!

- Now, with a gentle touch, unplug the volume connector from the board using your spudger. You got this!

Step 11

- Alright, let's get this Wi-Fi cover party started! First up, loosen those five Phillips screws holding it down. Once they’re free, drop those little guys onto your magnetic pad to keep them safe and sound. We're talking about 2 x 2.1 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 2.3 mm Phillips screw!

- Now, give that cover a gentle lift and off it goes! Easy peasy!

Step 12

- Let's get those six screws off the main board! You'll need: 1 x 2.3 mm hex screw, 2 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 1.8 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 2.5 mm Phillips screw. Grab your screwdriver and let’s do this!

- Next, gently pull out that little antenna cable. You've got this!

- Now, with a steady hand, carefully lift out the main board. You're making great progress!

Step 13

- First up, let’s get that cover unscrewed! Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove the 1 x 1.2 mm screw and free the cover.

- Now, go ahead and gently lift off the flashlight cover. You're doing great!

Step 14

- Time to get those five screws out of the way! Use your Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the standby/volume control cable. You'll need: 2 x 2.2 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 2.5 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 1.9 mm Phillips screw.

- Want to make it easier? A little hot air goes a long way! Warm up the area first, and you'll find the cable comes off like a breeze.

- Now, grab your spatula and gently slide it under the ribbon cable. Take your time and detach it from the base carefully.

- And just like that, the cable is free! You've got this!

Step 15

- Alright, it's time to put that standby/volume control cable back where it belongs! Secure it in place with those five Phillips screws—2 x 2.2 mm, 2 x 2.5 mm, and 1 x 1.9 mm. Tighten them up like you mean it!

- Once those screws are nice and snug, give those buttons a little test drive to check their sensitivity. If they’re not quite right, feel free to adjust those screws a bit. You've got this!

Step 16

- Attach the flashlight cover back on and secure it with that little 1 x 1.2 mm Phillips screw. You've got this!

Step 17

- Time to pop that main board back into its cozy spot! You've got this!

- Next, plug in the contacts for the standby/volume cable and the antenna cable. Make sure they're snug!

- Now, attach that little antenna cable—it's like the cherry on top!

- Secure everything with those five Phillips screws. Tighten them up and you’re golden!

Step 18

- Now it's time to pop in that Wi-Fi antenna and give it a good twist to secure it! You'll need to use 2 x 2.1 mm Phillips screws, 2 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws, and 1 x 2.3 mm Phillips screw to make sure everything is snug and ready to roll!

Step 19

- First up, let's connect that little buddy to the board—just pop it on there with a gentle touch.

- Next, grab that shiny silver cover and secure it in place with a 2 x 2.3 mm Phillips screw. You're on a roll!

Step 20

- Let's slide that camera back into its cozy spot and reconnect the camera's cable—easy does it!

- Now, let's pop on the camera cover and secure it with a little twist of those screws. If the cover's still hanging out with the camera, that's all good!

Step 21

- Reconnect the antenna and lightning connector cables with a gentle touch—just like connecting with an old friend!

Step 22

- Alright, time to slide that battery back into your iPhone! Just plug in the connector and you're one step closer to a fully functioning device!

Step 23

- Time to place the taptic engine back where it belongs—like a cozy homecoming!

- Secure it with those trusty screws again—2 x 1.5 mm Phillips screws to keep everything snug!

Step 24

Step 25

- First things first, let’s get those display connectors plugged in! It might take a couple of tries, so don’t sweat it. Just be super gentle and avoid bending those connectors. You’ve got this with the Front camera/sensor/earpiece/ambient microphone, Touch ID cable, and Display!

- Once everything is connected, fire up your iPhone! Check to see if the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece are all working smoothly. If the display connectors aren’t snug, you might see some funky stripes or find parts of the touchscreen acting shy!

- Now, let’s wrap things up by putting that connector cover back on and securing it tight. You’ll need 3 x 1.3 mm Phillips screws and 1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw for this!

Step 26

- Let's get that battery connector hooked up! It's like giving your phone a little boost of energy.

- Now, grab that shiny silver cover plate and secure it in place with a couple of screws—1 x 2.9 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw. You're almost there!

Step 27

- Gently fold down that display, making sure the edge at the top with the cables clicks into place just right. Now, give that display a little nudge down towards the home button along the edge until it's snugly fit in the frame. You're doing great!

Step 28

- Alright, let’s tighten up those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of your enclosure! We're talking about those 2 x 3.8 mm pentalobe screws. Make sure they're snug and secure, just like a warm hug for your device!

Step 29

- Time to get your iPhone back on track! Sync it up with iTunes or hop onto a WLAN network and chill for a moment while the time gets set.

- Next, let’s give that SIM tray a little love! Pop it out with the SIM card and then slide it back in.

- And just like that, toggle flight mode on and off—it's like a little refresh for your device!
