iPhone 8 Plus – Replacing the battery
Duration: 60 min.
Steps: 33 Steps
In this guide, we'll help you tackle the challenge of replacing your iPhone 8 Plus's faulty battery all by yourself! If your phone has been crashing during those intense gaming sessions, refusing to charge, or just running out of juice way too quickly, this repair is for you. Before diving in, make sure to back up all your precious data and zap away any static by touching something metal, like a radiator. Let’s get that iPhone back in action!
Step 1
- First things first, let's power down your iPhone to keep it safe and sound while we work our magic. Just press that Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds, and wait for the slider that says 'power off' to pop up.
- Now, give that slider a swipe from left to right. Your iPhone will take about ten seconds to fully shut down, so hang tight!
Step 2
2 × 3,4mm Pentalob
- Unscrew those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of your device, one on each side of the Lightning connector. Just a friendly tip: keep those little screws safe on your magnetic pad so they don’t go wandering off!
Step 3
- Start by placing your iPhone 8 Plus on a soft, clean surface to keep that shiny back from getting scratched.
- To lift the front panel, grab a suction cup, a hard plastic pick, and a heat gun. If the screen is really cracked, cover it with packing tape for a smoother operation.
- The screen is stuck to the frame, so let's heat things up! Use the heat gun to warm the outer edges of the display to about 60°C (140°F).
- Now, place the suction cup over the Home button (or next to it if that's tricky). While gently pulling up with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display. Push down on the aluminum frame as you go. Remember, the display is glued on, so you'll need to slide that pick all around the phone. Just be careful not to go too deep near the Sleep/Wake button – we don’t want to harm those delicate flex cables!
- Once you've got that pick in there, use it to pry the display away from the aluminum frame. You should see those tabs pop out. Now, just fold the display to the side.
- Lean the display against something stable to prevent those sensitive flex cables from bending too much.
If you find yourself needing a little warmth, give those outer edges of the display a gentle heat-up a few times. Just a friendly reminder: the flex cables for the display are hanging out on the side of the Sleep/Wake button. And hey, once you pop that iPhone 8 open, it’s waving goodbye to its warranty for dust and spray water protection (IP 67 rating).
Step 4
2 × 1,2 mm Phillips
1 × 1,4 mm Phillips
1 × 2,6 mm Phillips
Before you jump into the fun of repairing, make sure to disconnect the battery contact! This little step helps keep pesky short circuits at bay and stops your device from accidentally powering on while you're working your magic.
- Grab your trusty Phillips screwdriver (Ph00) and get ready to unscrew those Phillips screws. Once they're off, gently remove the cover. Don’t forget to keep all those little parts cozy in the same section of your magnetic pad!
- Next up, let's carefully lift off the battery contact. Just slide a plastic spudger in a tad below the connector and give it a gentle nudge.
Step 5
Display Connector
Home Button Connector
Step 6
1 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
1 × 0,9 mm Y-Type
- Grab your Y-Type screwdriver (Y000) and unscrew those two Y-Type screws. Once that's done, gently lift off the cover. Be sure to keep all the little parts cozy in the same section of your magnetic pad!
- Now, using your trusty spudger, carefully disconnect the FaceTime contact from the PCB. You're doing great!
- And just like that, you can now take off the display completely. Keep up the awesome work!
Step 7
2 × 1,3 mm Y-Type
1 × 2,6 mm Standoff
1 × 1,7 mm Phillips
The internal thread screw is a bit of a lone wolf – it doesn’t have that magnetic charm to keep it in place.
- First, let's tackle those two Y-type screws that are holding the bracket plate for the iSight camera connectors. Unscrew them and lift off that bracket plate like a pro!
- Now, it's time to disconnect the camera connectors. Grab your trusty spudger and gently slide it under the connectors to pry them off. Easy does it!
- Next up, unscrew the two screws securing the camera bracket and remove it. You're doing great!
- Finally, use that spudger again to nudge the camera unit out of its cozy frame and take it out. Keep up the awesome work!
Step 8
1 × 1,2 mm Phillips
1 × 2,9 mm Phillips
Standby / Volume Connector
- To kick things off, let's unscrew those two Phillips screws holding the bracket plate in place. They may be different lengths, but no worries! Just toss them all in the same cozy spot on your magnetic mat.
- Next, go ahead and lift off the bracket plate.
- Now it's time to disconnect the contact from the logic board. You're doing great!
Step 9
1 × 1,2 mm Phillips
2 × 1,1 mm Phillips
1 × 2,9 mm Phillips
2 × 1,0 mm Phillips-Schraube
One of the screws decided to take a detour and is snugly fitting sideways into the back cover. Let's get it straightened out!
- To kick things off, let's unscrew those Phillips screws from the plastic bracket. Make sure to keep them cozy in the same box!
- Next up, gently lift off the bracket.
- Surprise! There are two more Phillips screws hiding under the bracket, keeping a connection piece snug. Go ahead and remove those screws.
- Now, it's time to take out the connection piece. You're doing great!
Step 10
1 × 1,2 mm Phillips
Antenna Connector
- First, let's disconnect that connector from the board – it's time to say goodbye for now!
- Next, grab your Phillips screwdriver and remove the screw that's hanging out sideways into the back cover.
- The antenna is a bit shy and is lightly glued in place. Give it a little warm-up with some hot air to help it loosen up, or gently slide a steel spatula underneath the cable to disconnect it.
- Finally, go ahead and take out the antenna. You're doing great!
Step 11
- You can grab your trusty SIM tool or a paperclip to pop that SIM card tray right out! Just press the tool into the tiny hole on the tray, and voilà, it’s out!
Step 12
Wireless Charging Connector
Lightning Connector
Antenna Connector
- Grab your trusty spudger and gently wiggle those three connectors on the battery side of the logic board loose. You're doing awesome!
Step 13
1 × 2,5 mm Standoff
2 × 1,7 mm Phillips
1 × 2,2 mm Standoff
1 × 2,1 mm Standoff
Right next to those two little holes for the iSight camera, there's a nifty plastic holder for a screw, snugly resting on top of the logic board. Keep an eye on it!
- Time to unscrew all those little screws holding the logic board snugly in its place! You can use a special screwdriver designed for internal thread screws or a regular thin slotted screwdriver if that's what you've got.
- Once you've got those screws out, gently lift the logic board out by hand. You've got this!
Step 14
1 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
1 × 3,3 mm Phillips
1 × 2,5 mm Phillips
2 × 1,2 mm Phillips
1 × 2,3 mm Phillips
- First, let's tackle that Y-type screw and the two Phillips screws holding on the silver antenna bracket plate. Once they're out, you can lift that plate right off!
- Next, with a gentle touch, disconnect the coaxial antenna flex cable using your trusty spudger.
- Now it's time to remove those Phillips screws that are keeping the speaker snug in its spot. Remember, these screws come in different lengths, so keep them organized to avoid any mix-ups when you're putting everything back together.
- With those screws out of the way, you can easily remove the speaker and the antenna flex cable. You're doing fantastic!
Step 15
1 × 2,3 mm Standoff
2 × 1,3 mm Phillips
Taptic Engine Connector
- Grab your trusty spudger and gently pry the Taptic Engine's connector loose. You're doing great!
- Next, take off the internal thread screw along with the Phillips screws that are keeping the Taptic Engine in place. Almost there!
- Now, carefully lift out the Taptic Engine and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!
Step 16
- Grab your trusty tweezers or a spatula and gently peel off those black tabs. Underneath, you'll find the sneaky white adhesive strips waiting for you!
- Now, take a deep breath and pull out those adhesive strips slowly. Keep them as flat as a pancake at the level of your iPhone for the best results.
- Once you've successfully removed all the adhesive strips, you can finally say goodbye to the battery. You've got this!
Hold onto that battery and your iPhone like you're about to win a game of tug-of-war while you gently pull out the last adhesive strip. This way, the battery won't take a tumble out of your device!
If one of those sneaky adhesive strips decides to play hard to get, gently coax the battery out using a wide Spudger. Just remember, bending the battery is a no-go, so treat it with care!
Step 17
Battery Connector
Get those adhesive strips ready to roll! Just pop them in the device with the protective films still on, making sure they’re facing the right way. You're doing great!
When you're sticking those adhesive strips down, make sure to leave a little room on both sides to fold those tabs over. It’s all about making your life easier!
- Start by peeling off that big blue protective film and stick those adhesive strips right onto the bottom of the battery. Keep it neat and straight, just like you would with your favorite stickers!
- Now flip that battery over and take off the little blue and pink protective films from the tabs. They're just waiting to be removed!
- Fold those tabs around and stick them to the top of the battery. You're doing great, keep it up!
- Finally, peel off the large pink protective films from the tabs. Almost there!
Step 18
Battery Connector
Make sure to leave a little wiggle room between the battery and the frame on all sides. It's like giving your battery a comfy little hug!
- Time to pop that battery back into its cozy little home! Just check the battery connector to make sure everything's lined up just right.
- If you had to put the logic board in the case earlier, it's time to take it out again. Let's keep things organized!
Step 19
1 × 2,3 mm Standoff

1 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
1 × 3,3 mm Phillips
1 × 2,5 mm Phillips
- Time to get that speaker back where it belongs! Gently press it down towards the lower edge of your iPhone like you're tucking it in for a cozy nap.
- Make sure the antenna flex cable is snuggled right between the battery and the speaker. We want everything to fit just right!
- Now, grab your Phillips screws and fasten that speaker in place. You’ve got this!
- Next up, position the coaxial antenna connector over its socket and give it a gentle press down to connect. Easy peasy!
- Finally, reinsert the silver plate and secure it with the Y-type screw and those trusty Phillips screws. Almost there!
Step 21
1 × 2,5 mm Standoff
2 × 1,7 mm Phillips
1 × 2,2 mm Phillips
1 × 2,1 mm Standoff
- Slide the logic board back into its rightful home, making sure that the camera bracket is resting comfortably on top.

2 × 1,3 mm Y-Type
- Pop that camera unit back into its cozy spot and give it a little press to make sure it’s snug as a bug.
- Next up, reattach the camera bracket plate and secure it with the screws like a pro.
- Now it's time to connect the two camera connectors – make sure they’re snug!
- Finally, place the bracket plate over the contacts and screw it in tight. You're doing great!
Step 28
Getting your iPhone fixed up with a frame sticker gives it a nice shield against dust and splashes, but remember, it’s not a submarine – so it’s not 100% waterproof!
Make sure to get that frame sticker just right! Each corner has its own unique shape, so use that to guide you as you position it.
- To ensure that the new frame sticker sticks like it means it, give your device a good clean-up by removing all that pesky glue residue and dirt.
- Peel off the first layer of protective film from the frame sticker.
- Carefully position the frame sticker on one edge and gently attach it as you go. Make sure it's evenly placed and press it down firmly.
- Now, it's time to remove the remaining layers of film.

You can get creative with your glue bonding! Try using some plastic clamps or even sandwiching your device between two books for a snug fit while the glue sets.
- Start by setting the display on the edge of the frame and gently fold it over onto your iPhone.
- Now, give that display a good press all around to secure it into the frame.
Step 33
2 × 3,4mm Pentalobe
- Time to secure those two pentalobe screws right next to the Lightning connector! Just twist them in on both sides of the connector to keep everything snug and tight. You've got this!
