iPhone SE – Removing the mainboard

Duration: 90 min.
Steps: 20 Steps

Ready to give your iPhone SE’s PCB a little TLC? In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of removing the logic board yourself! If you’re looking to clean it up, you’ll definitely need to take out the logic board. Let’s get started on this fun little adventure!

Step 1

- First things first, let's power down that iPhone completely to keep it safe during the repair. We don't want any mishaps!

- Give that standby button a good press for about three seconds until you see the slider pop up.

- Now, swipe it from left to right. Your iPhone will take about ten seconds to shut down completely, so hang tight!

Step 2

- Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver to get that iPhone SE opened up!

- Now, let’s tackle those two pentalobe screws hanging out at the bottom of the enclosure, right next to the Lightning connector. Don’t forget to keep these little guys safe in the same box!

Step 3

- Set your iPhone SE down on a nice, soft surface to keep that back from getting scratched. We want it looking good!

- To pop that display off, grab a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If your screen is looking like a jigsaw puzzle, cover it with tape first to avoid any glass-related injuries.

- Place the suction cup over the Home button if you can (or just next to it). While you're lifting the display with the suction cup, use the hard plastic pick to press down on the aluminum frame. Insert the pick between the aluminum frame and the display. This might take a few tries, but you got this!

- Once you create a little gap, gently twist the pick to widen it. Easy does it!

- When you can lift the display a few millimeters, carefully work your way around the edges until it's loose on both sides. Don’t pull it off completely yet; we need to disconnect the Home button first.

- There’s a sneaky metal cover over the Home button. Use some tweezers to gently remove it.

- Once that cover is off, you can disconnect the Home button from the flexible flat Lightning cable.

Step 4

- Underneath a cover, you'll find the battery contact and the flexible flat Lightning cable contact. This cover is held in place by two Phillips screws. Grab your Phillips screwdriver and remove those screws, then use tweezers to gently lift the cover off. Remember to keep all those tiny parts organized in the same compartment of your organizer tray!

- Now, it's time to carefully detach the battery contact using a spudger. Just slide the pointed tip of the spudger slightly below the connector. If a spudger isn't handy, your fingernail can work too!

Step 5

- Let's kick things off by removing those four Phillips screws from the shiny silver cover. Make sure to keep them safe in the same container—no screw left behind! After that, give the cover a gentle lift to take it off.

- Next up, it's time to disconnect the three overlapping connectors in the order shown in the image. Be super careful here! Just slide the pointed tip of your spudger a tiny bit below each contact and lift it up. You've got this!

Step 6

- Time to disconnect the Lightning connector’s flex cable! Use your spudger to gently slide the pointed tip just below the contact and lift it up. It’s lightly glued to the back cover, so give it a little nudge to detach it and then fold it over carefully.

- Now, let’s tackle that antenna cable! Use the spudger again to gently pry it away from the logic board.

Step 7

- Pop that SIM card and its tray right out of the enclosure, like a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat!

Step 8

- Grab your trusty spudger and gently wiggle it to disconnect the flexible flat standby cable from the logic board. Just a little nudge and you'll be golden!

Step 9

- Those antenna contacts are held tight with a couple of Phillips screws. Let's get those screws out of the way! You've got 1 x 1.1 mm Phillips screw and 1 x 2.2 mm Phillips screw to remove.

- Once those screws are gone, gently lift the contact out of the enclosure. You're doing great!

Step 10

- Unscrew the six screws that hold the logic board to the back cover. You've got three 2.7 mm Phillips screws, one 2.7 mm Phillips screw (not magnetic), and two 2.1 mm Phillips screws to tackle!

- Time to bring out the tweezers! Gently disconnect that flexible flat standby cable from the logic board like a pro.

- Use the flat end of your trusty spudger to carefully lift the logic board out of the back cover. Just a heads up: the bottom of the logic board is connected to an antenna cable, so be gentle!

- Now, lift the logic board and give it a smooth 180° turn towards the volume rocker switch. You're doing great!

- Disconnect the antenna contact from the logic board. Almost there!

Step 11

- First up, let's connect that antenna cable to the socket on the bottom of the logic board—easy peasy!

- Next, gently place the logic board back into the cozy embrace of the back cover. It's like tucking it in for a nice nap!

- Now, let’s get that flexible flat standby cable’s antenna back on the logic board’s screw connection. It’s like reuniting old friends!

- Finally, grab those six screws and secure the logic board to the back cover just like before: 3 x 2.7 mm Phillips screws, 1 x 2.7 mm Phillips screw (not magnetic), and 2 x 2.1 mm Phillips screws. You've got this!

Step 12

- Let's get that antenna contact back where it belongs in the enclosure, shall we?

- Secure it in place with those two Phillips screws: one 1 x 1.1 mm screw (at a nifty 90° angle) and one 1 x 2.2 mm screw. You're on a roll!

Step 13

- Let's connect that flexible flat standby cable's plug to the logic board, shall we? Just a gentle nudge and you'll have it snug as a bug!

Step 14

- Pop that SIM card and its tray back into the enclosure like a pro! You've got this!

Step 15

- Let's get that antenna cable snugly connected to the logic board, shall we?

- Now, it's time to reconnect the Lightning connector to the logic board. You're doing awesome!

Step 16

- Reconnect those connectors! Sometimes the display connector can be a bit stubborn, so don’t worry if it takes a few attempts. Just be gentle and avoid bending them!

- Once everything's snug, fire up your iPhone! Give the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece a quick check. If those display connectors aren’t playing nice, you might see some funky stripes on the screen or parts of the touchscreen might decide to take a little break.

- Now, let's seal the deal! Install the cover and screw it in place.

Step 17

- First, let's connect that battery contact to the logic board. It’s like giving your phone a little hug!

- Now, pop the cover back on and secure it with those two Phillips screws. You’re almost there!

Step 18

- Slide that display into the enclosure from the top edge where all the connection cables are hanging out. Make sure it clicks in snugly!

- Before hooking up your device to the display, connect the Home button to the Lightning connector and secure them with the cover. Teamwork makes the dream work!

- Gently press down on the display towards the Home button until it fits perfectly in the frame. It should be nice and flush with the frame—like it was meant to be!

Step 19

- Alright, time to secure those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure! Let’s get that iPhone SE all buttoned up!

Step 20

- Let's get that iPhone of yours in sync with iTunes or hop onto a WLAN network and give it a moment to set the time. It'll be like magic!

- Carefully pop out the SIM tray along with the SIM card, then slide it back in. It's as easy as pie!

- Switch on airplane mode for a moment and then turn it off again. Just a little toggle to keep things fresh!
