iPhone SE – Replacing the earpiece
Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 11 Steps
Welcome to your guide on replacing the earpiece of your iPhone SE! If you're struggling to hear your buddy on the other end of the line or if calls sound like they're underwater, it’s time for a little repair magic. Follow along as we walk you through the steps to bring back that crisp, clear sound. Let’s get your phone back in action! If you need a hand or have questions, don’t hesitate to schedule a repair.
Step 1
- First, give your iPhone a little break and turn it off completely to keep it safe during the repair process.
- Next, press that standby button for about three seconds until you see the slider pop up.
- Now, just swipe it from left to right. Your iPhone will take about ten seconds to shut down completely, and then you’re all set!
Step 2
2 × Pentalobe
- Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver to get that iPhone SE open!
- Now, let's tackle those two pentalobe screws sitting pretty at the bottom of the enclosure, right next to the Lightning connector. Make sure to keep these little guys safe in the same box!
Step 3
Watch out for those sneaky shards of glass! They can be sharp, so handle with care and keep your fingers safe.
- First, set your iPhone SE down on a nice, soft surface to keep that lovely back from getting scratched.
- To get that display lifted, you'll need a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If your screen is looking a bit like a puzzle, cover it with tape to avoid any glass-related adventures.
- Place the suction cup right over the Home button if you can (if not, just pop it next to it). While you're gently lifting the display with the suction cup, use the hard plastic pick to press down on the aluminum frame. Slip that pick between the aluminum frame and the display. It might take a few tries, but you got this!
- Once you've opened up a tiny gap between the two parts, give that pick a little twist to widen it.
- When you can lift the display just a few millimeters, carefully work your way around the edges until it's loose on both sides. But hold up! Don’t take off the display completely just yet; you need to disconnect the Home button first.
- There’s a metal cover in the way of the Home button. Use a pair of tweezers to gently remove that cover.
- With the cover out of the way, you can now disconnect the Home button from the flexible flat Lightning cable.
Step 4
2 × 1.5 mm Phillips
- Underneath a cover, you'll find the battery contact and the flexible flat Lightning cable connection. This cover is held in place by two Phillips screws, so grab your Phillips screwdriver and remove them. Once those screws are out, use some tweezers to gently lift the cover off. Don’t forget to keep all the little parts cozy in the same compartment of your organizer tray!
- Now, let’s delicately detach the battery contact using a spudger. Just slide the pointed tip of the spudger slightly underneath the connector. If you’re fresh out of spudgers, your fingernail will do the trick too!
Step 5
1 × 1.4 mm Phillips
1 × 1.5 mm Phillips
2 × 1.1 mm Phillips
- First, let’s get those four Phillips screws out from the shiny cover. Toss them into the same container to keep them cozy. Now, give the cover a gentle lift to take it off.
- Next up, it's time to disconnect the three overlapping connectors in the order shown in the image. Take it easy and be careful! Use the pointed tip of your spudger and slide it just below each contact, then lift it up with a little finesse.
Step 6
1 × 4.0 mm Phillips
1 × 2.2 mm Phillips
- The earpiece is nestled snugly on the back of the display unit. Start by unscrewing those two Phillips screws from the cover of the earpiece and keep them safe in your trusty container.
- Next, gently lift off the cover and add it to the collection of screws you just removed.
- Now, go ahead and remove the earpiece. You're almost there!
Step 7
1 × 4.0 mm Phillips
1 × 2.2 mm Phillips
Heads up! Those screws are like a quirky puzzle – they come in different lengths. If you mix them up, one might just decide to poke at the display glass from the inside. Let's keep that glass safe and sound!
- Carefully place the earpiece back in its cozy spot on the front camera’s flexible flat cable. Once that's snug, pop the cover back on like a pro!
- Now, let’s tighten those Phillips screws. Double-check that the front camera is perfectly centered on the display. If it needs a little nudge, go ahead and adjust it!
Step 8
- Reconnect those connectors! It might take a couple of attempts to get the display connector just right, so take your time and be gentle to avoid any bending.
- Once everything is securely connected, fire up your iPhone! Give the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece a quick check. If the connectors aren’t snug, you might see some funky stripes on the screen or find that parts of the touchscreen are acting a little rebellious.
- Finally, pop the cover back on and screw it into place. You're doing great!

2 × 1.1 mm Phillips
If those display connectors are feeling a bit shy and don’t connect just right, you might see some funky stripes on the screen or notice that parts of the touchscreen are playing hard to get. Let’s make sure everything’s snug and ready to go!
Step 9
2 × 1.5 mm Phillips
- First, connect the battery contact to the logic board like a pro!
- Next, pop that cover back on and secure it with the two Phillips screws. You're almost there!
Step 10
- Slide that display into the enclosure at the top edge where the connection cables hang out. Make sure it clicks in place like it’s meant to be there!
- Before you can connect your device to the display, connect the Home button to the Lightning connector and fasten them down with the cover. Teamwork makes the dream work!
- Gently press the display towards the Home button until it sits perfectly in the frame. The display should be nice and flush with the frame, just like a well-fitted puzzle piece.
Step 11
2 × 3.8 mm Pentalobe
- Now, let’s get those two pentalobe screws snugly back in at the bottom of the enclosure. You've got this!
