iPhone SE – Replacing the iSight camera
Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 11 Steps
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to swap out your iPhone SE’s faulty rear camera all by yourself! If your main camera is playing hide and seek, your photos are looking a bit fuzzy, or the focus is as elusive as a good Wi-Fi signal, then this repair is just what you need. Let’s get that camera back in action!
Step 1
- Let's make sure your iPhone takes a little nap before we dive into the repair! Power it off completely to keep it safe.
- Give that standby button a gentle press for about three seconds until the slider pops up.
- Slide it from left to right, and just like that, your iPhone will be off in about ten seconds. Easy peasy!
Step 2
2 × Pentalobe
- Grab your trusty pentalobe screwdriver to crack open that iPhone SE like a pro!
- Now, let’s tackle those two pentalobe screws hanging out at the bottom of the enclosure. They’re chillin’ on either side of the Lightning connector. Don’t forget to keep these little guys safe in the same box!
Step 3
Watch out for those sneaky shards of glass! Keep your hands safe and sound while you work on your iPhone SE.
- Set your iPhone SE down on a soft, clean surface to keep that back shiny and scratch-free.
- To lift the display like a pro, grab a suction cup and a hard plastic pick. If your screen looks like it went through a battle, throw some tape over it first—safety first, right? We want to avoid any glass-related mishaps.
- Stick the suction cup over the Home button if you can (if not, just place it nearby). While you gently pull up on the display, use that hard plastic pick to nudge down the aluminum frame. Slide the pick between the frame and the display—this might take a few tries, but you've got this!
- Once you've created a tiny gap, you can gently twist the pick to widen it a bit more.
- When you can lift the display just a smidge, carefully work your way around the edges until it’s loosened on both sides. But hold your horses! Don't remove the display completely yet; you need to disconnect the Home button first.
- A metal cover is blocking your path to the Home button. Use some tweezers to carefully remove it.
- With the cover off, you can now disconnect the Home button from the flexible flat Lightning cable.
Step 4
2 × 1.5 mm Phillips
- Underneath a cover, you'll find the battery contact and the flexible flat Lightning cable contact. This cover is held in place by two Phillips screws. Grab your Phillips screwdriver and remove those screws, then gently lift the cover using tweezers. Make sure to stash all the parts in the same spot in your organizer tray!
- Next, it's time to delicately detach the battery contact with your trusty spudger. Just slide the pointed tip slightly beneath the connector. If you’re lacking a spudger, your fingernail will do the trick too!
Step 5
1 × 1.4 mm Phillips
1 × 1.5 mm Phillips
2 × 1.1 mm Phillips
- First, let’s tackle those four Phillips screws on the silver cover! Make sure to keep them all together in one spot—no one likes a missing screw! Once they're out, gently lift the cover off.
- Next up, it's time to disconnect those three overlapping connectors. Follow the order shown in the image, and take your time! Carefully slide the pointed tip of your spudger just below each contact and give it a little lift. You've got this!
Step 6
- Grab your trusty spudger and gently disconnect the iSight camera’s connector from the logic board. You've got this!
- The camera is snugly held in place by a rubber cover that’s hooked onto two metal tabs. Carefully detach the cover from those tabs and fold it over toward the edge of the back cover—easy peasy!
- Now, it's time to remove the camera. You're almost there!
Step 7
- Position the rear camera back into its cozy spot on the back cover.
- Secure the camera with the rubber cover you previously removed by hooking it onto the two metal tabs.
- Connect the camera to the logic board and you're all set!
Step 8
- Reconnect those connectors like a champ! Sometimes it takes a few tries to get that display connector just right, so take it slow and be gentle to avoid any bending.
- Once everything is snug, fire up your iPhone! Give a quick check to the LCD, touchscreen, proximity sensor, front camera, and earpiece. If the connectors aren't snug, you might see some funky stripes on the screen or parts of the touchscreen might decide to take a little break.
- Finally, pop the cover back on and screw it in place. You're almost there!

2 × 1.1 mm Phillips
Hey there! If those display connectors are feeling a bit shy and don't connect just right, you might see some funky stripes on your screen or certain parts of the touchscreen might decide to take a little break. Let's make sure everything's snug and working perfectly!
Step 9
2 × 1.5 mm Phillips
- First, connect the battery contact back to the logic board like a pro!
- Next, pop that cover back on and secure it with the two Phillips screws. You’re almost done!
Step 10
- Slide the display into the enclosure from the top edge where the connection cables hang out. Make sure it clicks in snugly; we want a perfect fit!
- Before you can get your device all cozy with the display, connect the Home button to the Lightning connector and secure everything with the cover—let's keep it neat!
- Gently press down on the display towards the Home button until it’s sitting pretty in the frame. The display should be flush with the frame—nice and tidy!
Step 11
2 × 3.8 mm Pentalobe
- Time to secure things up! Grab your pentalobe screwdriver and fasten those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure. They’re just waiting to help keep everything snug and secure!
