Duration: 45 min.
Steps: 17 Steps
Welcome to your iPhone Xr repair adventure! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to remove the motherboard like a pro. Each step comes with a handy video to show you the ropes, just hit that play button in the top right corner of the first picture at each step. Remember, when you’re loosening the front camera, FaceID unit, and earpiece, take it easy! These parts are tricky and can’t be replaced without waving goodbye to your FaceID feature. Let’s get started on this journey to revive your iPhone Xr! And if you ever feel overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to schedule a repair with us!
Step 1
- First, let's give your iPhone a little break! Power it down completely to keep it safe while we work our magic. Just press and hold the Standby button along with one of the volume buttons for about three seconds, and voilà—the "Power off" slider will pop up.
- Now, give that slider a gentle swipe from left to right. Your iPhone will take about ten seconds to shut down completely. Easy peasy!
Step 2
2 × 6,8 mm Pentalobe
Opening up your iPhone Xr means it will no longer be covered for dust and water protection (IP 67 rating). So, keep it dry and clean while we work our magic!
- Unscrew those two pentalobe screws hanging out at the bottom edge of the back cover—one's chilling to the right and the other's to the left of the Lightning connector. Don't forget to toss those screws into the same spot on your magnetic pad so they don’t wander off!
Step 3
Keep your tool's adventures to a maximum of 5 mm into the gap—let's avoid any accidental damage to those tiny iPhone parts hiding inside!
If you're rocking an iFlex, it's time to switch gears and grab a plastic pick! This will keep your frame scratch-free and looking sharp.
- Set your iPhone Xr down on a cozy, clean surface—this will keep its back from getting scratched up!
- To pop off the front panel, grab a suction cup, a hard plastic pick, and a heat gun. If your screen looks like it’s been through a battle, cover it with packing tape to keep things tidy.
- The screen is glued to the frame, so let’s warm things up! Use a heat gun to gently heat the outer edges of the display to around 60°C (140°F).
- Stick the suction cup at the bottom of the display. While you lift the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic pick between the frame and the display and gently press down on the frame.
Step 4
- Grab your trusty Y-Type screwdriver (Y000) and let's get those Y-Type screws out of the way! Once that's done, gently remove the bracket plate. Remember to keep all those little parts cozy on the same spot of your magnetic pad!
- Now, it's time for a delicate dance! Carefully wiggle the spudger under the battery connector and pry it off with a gentle touch. You've got this!
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
Battery connector
Before you get your hands dirty, make sure to disconnect the battery contact! This little step keeps short circuits at bay and prevents your device from accidentally springing to life while you work your magic.
Apple rolled out the Y-Type screws starting with the iPhone 7, and they sometimes get mistaken for Tri-Point or Tri-Wing screws. Make sure to use the right Y-Type screwdriver to avoid stripping those screw heads—no one wants that kind of drama!
Step 5
- The display unit is hooked up with three connectors, all nestled beneath two cover plates. Let's find them!
- Grab your trusty spudger and gently pry apart the connectors for the display and earpiece, one at a time. You've got this!
2 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
Display connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
Earpiece connector
When you're prying off those connectors with your trusty spudger, be super gentle! We don’t want any accidental breakage. Keep a firm grip on the display so it stays put while you disconnect everything. You've got this!
After you've unplugged those two lower connectors, feel free to lay the display flat next to the device—thanks to the generous length of the earpiece cable!
Step 6
1 × 2,2 mm Standoff
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
Camera connector
Got a Standoff screw giving you trouble? No worries! You can use special screwdrivers designed just for that, or if you're feeling adventurous, a regular, thin slotted screwdriver will do the trick—just be gentle!
- Unscrew the two screws and gently lift off the bracket plate that holds the camera in place.
- Using a spudger, carefully disconnect the camera's connector.
- With a bit of finesse, pry out the camera using the spudger and set it aside.
Step 7
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
1 × 1,4 mm Phillips
1 × 3,0 mm Standoff
SIM reader connector
- First up, let's pop that SIM card holder out of your device. It's like giving your phone a little breather!
- Next, grab your trusty spudger and gently disconnect the contact. No need to rush—take it slow and steady!
- Now, it's time to loosen those screws keeping the card reader snug as a bug. There's a little metal clip attached with a screw—use your tweezers to hold it steady while you remove that screw. Keep track of the alignment; we want it to fit back in just right later on!
- And just like that, you can now remove the SIM card reader. You're doing great!
Step 8
- Let's get those connectors off the logic board! They’re the lifeline for your charging socket, flash, front camera, and volume keys—time to say goodbye for now.
- Keep an eye out for one sneaky contact hiding under a front camera cable. Gently nudge that cable aside and pop off the connector with care.
- Next, it's time to loosen up those motherboard screws. A little twist and turn goes a long way!
- Now, carefully bend all those flex cables to the side and lift out the logic board. You're almost there!
Lightning Connector
Wireless charging connector
Antenna connector
Front camera & FaceID connector
Standby & flashlight connector
Mute & volume button connector
2 × 2,9 mm Standoff
1 × 1,7 mm Phillips
2 × 2,8 mm Standoff
Right next to the camera opening, you'll spot a little plastic holder meant for a screw (it's the top left star of the show in the picture!). Don't forget, you'll need to pop this plastic holder back over the logic board later on. Keep it safe!
Step 9
- Alright, let’s make sure all those flex cables are chillin' flat against the back cover before we slide in the logic board. Give those cables a little nudge to the side so they don’t get stuck under the board. You've got this!
2 × 2,9 mm Standoff
1 × 1,7 mm Phillips
2 × 2,8 mm Standoff
Lightning Connector
Wireless charging connector
Antenna connector
Front camera & FaceID connectors
Standby & flashlight connector
Mute & volume button connector
Just a friendly reminder: the black plastic holder nestled right below the camera needs to be perfectly positioned above the screw opening on the logic board. Keep it cozy!
Step 10
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
1 × 1,4 mm Phillips
1 × 3,0 mm Standoff
SIM reader connector
- Pop that SIM card reader back in and secure it with a screw—let's keep it cozy!
- Ensure that the tiny metal clip goes in the right way; it's like a puzzle piece that needs to fit just right.
- Connect the card reader's connector—let's get them talking!
- Slide in the SIM card holder. If you feel any resistance, it might mean the card reader isn’t snug yet—let's make sure everything's in its happy place!
Step 11
1 × 2,2 mm Standoff
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
Camera connector
Before you pop that camera in, give the lens and the insides a little love! Make sure they're free from dust and fingerprints—let's keep everything looking sharp and pristine!
- Carefully place the camera back where it belongs and give it a little press down to secure it.
- Connect the camera's connector like a pro.
- Position the bracket plate just right and fasten it in place using those handy screws.
Step 12
While a frame sticker will keep your iPhone Xr safe from dust and light splashes, it's not a superhero cape—so no deep diving or water fights!
Check out the iPhone X in the pictures! The iPhone Xr is pretty much its twin and can be re-glued just the same way. You're going to nail this repair!
- To ensure that the new frame sticker sticks like a champ, let's get rid of any leftover glue and dirt from the metal frame.
- Peel off that first protective film layer from the frame sticker and get ready to stick!
- Carefully align the frame sticker on one edge of the frame and gradually attach it. Make sure it’s even and give it a good press down. A plastic spudger can be your best buddy here to help with the adhesive.
- Now, off with the next large protective film!
- Feel free to keep the small protective films on for now. You can remove them later once you’ve connected the display and attached the bracket plates. This way, you won’t accidentally stick anything to the frame sticker before installation. But hey, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can peel those off right away!
Step 13
- Position the display next to your device like it's ready for a cozy hangout!
Earpiece connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
Display connector
2 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
When you're connecting those little buddies, make sure they fit snugly in their cozy spots! Avoid sliding them around on the logic board—let's keep those contacts safe and sound!
To connect the other connectors, prop the display up against something sturdy. This way, you’ll keep those delicate flex cables from stretching too much. You're doing great!
Step 14
Battery connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
- Alright, let’s get that battery connector plugged back in—it's time for a little reunion!
- Next up, grab the bracket plate and slide it into place. Secure it with those Y-Type screws, and you're all set!
Step 15
- Let's check out the brightness of that display—make sure it's shining bright like a diamond!
- Time to give that touchscreen a workout! Pick an app and drag it all over the screen. If it keeps up with your finger, you're in the clear!
- Want to test your microphone, speakers, earpiece, and proximity sensor? Fire up the voice memo app and let it do its thing!
Step 16
Check out the iPhone X in the pictures! The iPhone Xr is pretty much its twin and can be re-glued just the same way. You're going to nail this repair!
- Grab the display with both hands and gently lower it into place. Think of it like giving your phone a cozy hug!
- Ensure it fits snugly all around the frame and give it a little press down here and there to make sure it's all settled in nicely.
Step 17
2 × 6,8 mm Pentalobe
- Time to secure those two pentalobe screws on either side of the Lightning connector! Just twist them into the enclosure and you'll be one step closer to a fully functional iPhone Xr. You've got this!
