iPhone Xr – Replacing the screen
Duration: 30 min.
Steps: 18 Steps
Handle those tiny parts with care! Some of them are irreplaceable, and losing them could mean your phone might miss out on cool features like Face ID. Keep an eye out for the delicate earpiece/sensor flex cable—it’s super sensitive!
Welcome to your DIY adventure! In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to swap out that faulty display on your iPhone Xr like a pro. Whether your screen is cracked, the touch isn’t responding, or the OLED is playing hide and seek with the colors, we’ve got your back! Just a heads up: make sure to back up your data before diving in and give a little touch to something metal, like your heater, to zap away any static. Let’s get started!
Step 1
- First, let's give your iPhone a little nap. Completely power it down to keep it safe during our repair escapade. Just press and hold the Standby button along with one of the volume buttons for three seconds until that 'Power off' slider pops up.
- Now, swipe that slider from left to right. Your iPhone will take about ten seconds to fully shut down, so hang tight!
Step 2
2 × 6,8 mm Pentalobe
Once you pop that back cover off, your iPhone Xr says goodbye to its dust and water protection (IP 67 rating). Keep that in mind as you dive into this repair adventure!
- Let's tackle those two pentalobe screws at the bottom edge of the back cover! They’re hanging out to the right and left of the Lightning connector. Remember to place those little screws in the same area of your magnetic pad so they don’t go on an adventure without you!
Step 3
Keep your tools chill and don’t go deeper than 5 mm into that gap! We want to avoid any mishaps with those tiny, precious parts inside your iPhone.
If you're using an iFlex, swap it out for a plastic pick as soon as you can to avoid scraping the frame. Remember, safety first!
- Place your iPhone Xr on a soft, clean surface to keep that back safe from scratches.
- To lift the front panel, grab a suction cup, a hard plastic pick, and a heat gun. If your screen is looking like a jigsaw puzzle, cover it with packing tape before proceeding.
- The display is stuck to the frame. Use that heat gun to warm up the outer edges of the display to about 60°C (140°F).
- Position the suction cup at the bottom of the display. While gently lifting the screen with the suction cup, slide the hard plastic pick between the frame and the display and press down on the frame.
Step 4
- Grab your trusty Y-Type screwdriver (Y000) and let’s get those Y-Type screws out of the way! Once you've done that, gently lift off the bracket plate. Make sure to keep all those little parts in the same cozy spot on your magnetic pad.
- Next up, let’s delicately pry off that battery contact. Just slide a spudger under the connector and lift carefully. You’ve got this!
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
Battery connector
Before you jump into the repair fun, make sure to disconnect that battery contact! It’s like putting your device on a little vacation—no short circuits and no accidental power-ups while you're tinkering away.
Apple rolled out Y-Type screws starting with the iPhone 7, but don't let the name fool you! They often get mistaken for Tri-Point or Tri-Wing screws. Make sure to grab a Y-Type screwdriver that fits like a glove to avoid stripping those screw heads—nobody wants that!
Step 5
- The display unit is hooked up with three connectors nestled beneath two cover plates. How cozy!
- Grab your trusty spudger and carefully disconnect the display and earpiece connectors one at a time. You're doing great!
2 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
Display connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
Earpiece connector
Be gentle when prying off those connectors with the spudger! Keep a steady hand on the display to make sure it doesn’t go wandering off while you’re disconnecting everything.
After you've unplugged those two lower connectors, feel free to lay the display flat next to your device—it's got a long enough earpiece cable to chill out comfortably!
Step 6
2 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
1 × 2,1 mm Phillips
When you're getting cozy with the earpiece, just remember to treat that sensitive flex cable like the precious gem it is! If it gets damaged, you won’t be able to replace it, and your FaceID will be off duty. So, keep it gentle and steady!
- Unscrew and take out those four screws holding the earpiece in place—let's set it free!
- Once you've got all the screws out, gently loosen the slightly glued cable on the side of the earpiece and fold it to the side with care. You're doing great!
Step 7
Be extra careful when removing these parts. The flex cable is very easy to damage.
- Start by taking out the tiny metal holder that's hanging out above the ambient light sensor. It's time for it to shine elsewhere!
- The flex cable has a bit of a clingy relationship with some glue. Give it a warm hug with a heat gun or a trusty blow dryer to loosen things up.
- Carefully slide a flat, sturdy tool like a steel spatula or some tweezers under the flex cable. Remember, gentle is the name of the game!
- Now, with a steady hand, gently pry out those different sensors from their cozy spots.
- Once everything is free, you can finally lift out the flex cable. You’re doing awesome!
Step 8
9 × 1,0 mm Y-Type
Some screws can be a bit stubborn, so it's crucial to have a top-notch Y-Type screwdriver on hand. Trust us, your future self will thank you for it!
- Alright, let’s get those Y-Type screws on the side loosened up! Just a little twist and turn, and we’ll be on our way to a successful repair adventure!
Step 9
Plastic guides
- Not every display out there comes with the same bells and whistles! If you find yourself in need, you might have to rescue some of these plastic parts from your old display before you welcome the new screen into your life (they're just a tad glued on): Front camera holder, Infrared camera holder, Sensor holder.
- Front camera holder
- Infrared camera holder
- Sensor holder
- Time to peel off that protective film from your shiny new display and get rid of those pesky seals!
Step 10
9 × 1,0 mm Y-Type
Just a friendly reminder: watch out for that second cable when you're placing the plate back on. We don't want it getting pinched—let's keep everything cozy and happy!
- Guide that flex cable through the opening like a pro! Once it’s in place, tilt that plate at the lower edge just right. You got this!
Step 11
- Grab that flex cable with the earpiece and sensors like a champ!
- Carefully guide those sensors through their designated openings in the display.
- Give the sensors a little push to make sure they’re snug and secure.
- Don’t forget to attach the small metal holder right above the ambient light sensor. It’s the cherry on top!
Step 12
2 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,1 mm Y-Type
1 × 2,1 mm Phillips
Keep those screws organized and don’t go overboard with the tightening! If you do, they might just decide to peek through the front of your display like they own the place.
- Fold down the earpiece and align those screw holes perfectly over the display threads. We want everything to fit just right!
- Now, grab those assorted screws and secure the earpiece in place. You've got this!
Step 13
If you give your iPhone a makeover with a frame sticker, it’ll be ready to fend off dust and a splash or two, but don’t expect it to be an underwater champion—it's not 100% waterproof!
Check out the images featuring the iPhone X! The iPhone Xr is pretty much its twin, and you can re-glue it just like this one.
- To ensure that your new frame sticker sticks like it means it, start by giving that metal frame a good clean. Say goodbye to any leftover glue and dirt!
- Peel off the first layer of protective film from the frame sticker. It's time to get down to business!
- Carefully align the frame sticker with one edge of the frame and attach it gradually. Make sure it’s straight and give it a gentle press. A plastic spudger can be your best buddy here to help secure that adhesive!
- Now, it’s time to remove the next big protective film. Let’s keep going!
- Feel free to leave the small protective films on for now. You can peel them off once you've hooked up the display and attached the bracket plates. This little trick keeps everything clean and tidy until you’re ready to finish. But hey, if you're eager, you can take them off right away!
Step 14
- Place the display next to your device like it's ready for a cozy hangout!
Earpiece connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
1 × 1,5 mm Phillips
1 × 1,3 mm Phillips
Display connector
2 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
When plugging in those connectors, give them a snug fit—like a warm hug! Just remember, no sliding them around on the logic board; we don’t want to hurt those delicate contacts!
To connect the other connectors, lean the display against a stable object. In this way you avoid stretching the sensitive flex cables too far.
Step 15
Battery connector
3 × 1,2 mm Y-Type
- Alright, it's time to reconnect that battery connector like a champ!
- Next up, slide in the bracket plate and secure it with those Y-Type screws. You've got this!
Step 16
- Let’s kick things off by checking the brightness of that display! A little adjustment here can make a big difference.
- Next up, let’s put that touchscreen to the test! Open an app and drag it around the screen. If it follows your finger like a loyal puppy, you’re all set!
- Time to give your microphone, speakers, earpiece, and proximity sensor a little workout! Fire up the voice memo app and see how they perform. You're doing great!
Step 17
The pictures show the iPhone X, but don't worry—the steps for the iPhone Xr are just as easy to follow! You're on the right track!
- Hold onto that display with both hands and gently ease it down into place.
- Ensure it fits snugly in every corner of the frame, applying a little pressure all around to secure it.
Step 18
2 × 6,8 mm Pentalobe
- Let's get those two pentalobe screws snugly back into their home on either side of the Lightning connector! Just twist them in and make sure they’re cozy in the enclosure.
