Step 1: Remove the Lower Case Screws

Start by removing the 10 screws that secure the lower case to the MacBook Pro. Seven of these screws are 3 mm Phillips screws, while the other three are 13.5 mm Phillips screws. Use your Phillips screwdriver to remove these screws and set them aside.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Case

With the screws removed, you can now lift the lower case and push it toward the rear of the computer to free the mounting tabs. Be careful not to damage any of the cables or connectors as you remove the lower case.

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery Connector

Use the flat end of a spudger to lift the battery connector up out of its socket on the logic board. This will help prevent any electrical discharge as you work on the MacBook.

Step 4: Remove the Fan Connector

Use a spudger to pry the fan connector out of its seat, and straight up off the logic board. Be careful not to break the plastic fan socket off the logic board as you use your spudger to lift the fan connector straight up and out of its socket.

Step 5: Remove the Fan

Remove the three screws that secure the fan to the upper case. One of these screws is 6.5 mm Phillips, while the other two are 5.5 mm Phillips and 4.5 mm Phillips. Lift the fan out of the upper case.

Step 6: Remove the Display Data Cable Bracket

Remove the two screws that secure the display data cable bracket to the upper case. One of these screws is 7 mm Phillips, while the other is 5 mm Phillips. Lift the display data cable bracket out of the upper case.

Step 7: Remove the Microphone

Use the tip of a spudger to pry the microphone off the adhesive attaching it to the upper case. Be careful not to damage the microphone or the surrounding area.

Step 8: Remove the Logic Board

Lift the logic board from its left edge and raise it until the ports clear the side of the upper case. Pull the logic board away from the side of the upper case and remove it, minding the DC-in board that may get caught.

Step 9: Deroute the Microphone Cable

Peel the tape off covering the microphone cable connector. Use the flat end of a spudger to pry the microphone cable connector up off the logic board. Deroute the microphone cable from the channel in the left speaker.
