DIY Sony PlayStation 4 CUH-1200 Disassembly Guide
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 21 Steps
Sony has rolled out three versions of the PS4, and this latest one is packed with changes. We took it apart to explore all the differences. *Heads up: Following this guide is at your own risk. Salvation Repair isn’t responsible for any damage that might occur while you’re following along.
Step 1
– CUH-1200A Unboxing
– – Let’s crack this baby open and see what’s inside! Carefully remove all the packaging, taking a moment to admire the thoughtful design. Keep those small bits and pieces handy—they’re going to make your life easier later.
Step 2
– The hard drive cover slides off easily—just like the older models. Give it a gentle push, and voila!
Step 3
– Pop out that one little screw holding the hard drive in place—easy peasy—and then just slide the drive right out like a pro.
– Grab yourself a trusty PH 0 screwdriver for this move. It’s the hero of this step.
Step 4
– Use a pick or something similar to peel off those warranty stickers and uncover the two black T9 security Torx screws.
– Remove the two T9 security Torx screws.
– Here’s a cool update: we’ve only got two screws holding the plastics on this model, compared to four in the previous versions. Nice and simple!
Step 5
– First, take out the two screws holding the top cover in place on your PS4. Trust me, following these steps will make it a breeze:
– Now, we get our first look at the inside of the CUH 1200 model. The motherboard is way smaller, and the APU clamp has had a total makeover. This model’s interior is totally different from previous ones.
– 1) Get a good grip under the top cover, near the power button.
– 2) Pull up… you’ll hear a click or snap as you lift.
– 3) Move your hand to the other side of the top cover and give it a pull there too.
– 4) Once you’ve lifted both sides of the top cover, it should slide back and off the PS4.
Step 6
– To pop off the bottom cover, give it a solid pull on each side near the back of the console.
– You might manage it with just your hands, but a trusty opening tool could come in handy to pry it loose.
– Now we get our first peek inside—hello, redesigned power supply and optical drive!
Step 7
– Once we lift off the bottom plastic, we spot the new physical eject button from Sony. It’s a major shift from the previous models.
– This change seems to tackle the ‘random ejecting’ of discs that bothered older versions.
Step 8
Once you’ve loosened it up, you can gently lift it a bit, but remember, it’s still hanging on by that four-wire connector! So, hold your horses and don’t yank it out just yet—let’s disconnect that in the next step.
– First, let’s tackle those screws! Remove the three T9 torx screws followed by the two long Phillips PH 0 screws. Easy peasy!
– Now, gently lift the left side (that’s the side without the four wires) and then move on to the right side. Just a heads up, the right side of the power supply might put up a bit of a fight, so give it a firm tug!
Step 9
Take care here – this connector can come off the motherboard pretty easily.
Make sure you’re gently pulling on the connector that leads to the power supply, not the one on the motherboard.
– First things first, let’s disconnect that four-wire connector from the motherboard. You’ve got this!
– For this task, mini pliers are your best buddies. Gently pull up on one side, then the other. Just keep alternating back and forth until it pops off like a champ.
– And voilà! The power supply is now free to be removed. Great job!
Step 10
– With the same trusty pliers, gently tug the WiFi antenna cable upwards.
– That wide optical drive cable? It’s got a black ‘collar’ that needs lifting on each side. This will free the cable.
– The other two cables can be popped right out of their sockets.
Step 11
– Take out that trusty T9 security torx screwdriver and unscrew the screw that’s holding the WiFi antenna in place.
– Gently guide the WiFi cable out of its path. Be patient—you’re doing great!
Step 12
– Detach the small ribbon cable from the optical drive.
– Unscrew the five T9 security torx screws.
– Take out the two PH 0 phillips screws along with the green PCB board.
Step 13
– While the optical drive got a fresh makeover, it’s still rocking the same trusty roller system with that white bar in the middle. Heads up though—those white bars have a habit of going rogue, so keep an eye on them!
– The laser and its carrier are pretty much a déjà vu from earlier models. Nothing too surprising there, but still worth noting!
Step 14
Watch out for that tiny metal nut hiding under the black cover on the top left! It’s the trusty sidekick for one of the two long screws that keep the power supply snug in place, which we tackled in earlier steps. Keep it safe and sound!
– First up, let’s tackle those twelve T9 security torx screws – they’re just waiting to be removed!
– Next, grab your trusty tool and take out six PH 0 Phillips screws. They’re no match for you!
– Now, onto three more PH 0 Phillips screws. Almost there!
– Just two more PH 0 Phillips screws to go! You’re doing great!
– Finally, give that top metal shield a gentle pull to lift it off the console. You’ve got this!
Step 15
– First off, let’s talk about the motherboard! Besides its impressive size, we can’t help but notice that Sony has completely revamped the heat sink clamp. We’re optimistic that this redesign will help tackle the pesky issue of PS4s powering on and then shutting off again. Fingers crossed!
Step 16
– First up, let’s tackle those two PH 0 Phillips screws—time to unscrew and groove!
– Next, gently pry up the power button, releasing the little hook that’s holding onto the motherboard. You’ve got this!
– Once the clamp is out of the way, don’t forget to remove the spacer hiding underneath it. It’s a sneaky little thing!
– Now, with the hook lifted, the button should slide right out. Easy peasy!
Step 17
– As you gently lift the front of the motherboard, you’ll spot the fan still connected. Just grab that connector with a pair of small pliers and give it a little tug to disconnect it.
– Once that’s out of the way, the motherboard will pop right out!
Step 18
– Alright, here’s a cool twist! Unlike the older models, this one has no RAM hanging out on one side of the motherboard—what a minimalist makeover!
– Don’t worry, though! The same amount of RAM is packed in, but the number of chips has been sliced down the middle. Efficiency for the win!
– And here’s some big news—the HDMI port finally got the glow-up it deserved! The old design was a bit of a headache, but this new version? Smooth and sturdy. Nice!
Step 19
– Start by removing three PH 0 Phillips screws. After that, take off the metal piece.
– With the metal piece out of the way, there’s just one more screw (PH 0) holding the fan in place. Remove it, and you’re all set!
Step 20
– As we got into putting this PS4 back together, we found this tiny piece chilling on the bottom metal sheet. Turns out, it belongs on top of the motherboard, right where one of those long power supply screws goes in. Oh, and don’t forget, a black plastic piece covers it up once everything’s in place. Keep it steady and carry on!
Step 21
– With this new and exciting model of the PS4, we’re hopeful that Sony has tackled some of the pesky issues from the previous versions (looking at you, HDMI port!). We’re feeling cautiously optimistic about these improvements.
Success!
