3M WorkTunes Connect Earmuffs Teardown
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 4 Steps
Step 1
– To make life easier, try rotating the muff body clips 90° when inserting or removing them. The plastic stud underneath is oval-shaped and marked in green in the image for your reference.
– Remove the pad by gently sliding a large flathead screwdriver or butter knife underneath the plastic backing plate of the padding and work your way through to the muff shell. Give it a twist, and the underlying plastic should pop off. It’s tricky at first, but after a few tries, your fingers will thank you for it.
– Boom, it’s free! Just make sure not to twist or yank the cable too much.
Step 2
– Grab a T7 bit and let’s dive into the opening process!
– Flip the earcup around and check out the circuit board. There’s a little space on the ear cup, just deep enough for our needs. The wires heading to the speaker are secured with glue for extra support (we didn’t snap a pic this time).
– Here’s another angle showcasing the BES2000 SoC.
– For the wire colors, here’s how they line up: Blue-Gold, Green, Red-White, Blue, Orange, Red. You got this!
Step 3
– This device has a battery and a connector PCB. The battery is a 603040 lithium-ion type, measuring 6mm in thickness, 30mm in height, and 42mm in width. It also features a 3-pin JST connector (including a thermistor).
Step 4
– The left-side speaker and its cavity measure 37mm in width and 16mm in depth. There’s some extra room below the speaker—likely for enhancing the sound. The rubber gasket is securely glued on. The right side has a similar setup, but it’s not quite as deep.
– For the earpad replacement, make sure you’re using GEL-HYG cups, which are specifically designed for WorkTunes. Peltor-style replacements won’t do the trick, so keep that in mind!
