How to Fix a Broken XLR Microphone Cable
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 5 Steps
XLR cables can take a beating, and sometimes their soldered connections just can’t keep up. This guide walks you through cracking open an XLR connector and bringing those loose wires back together with a trusty soldering iron.
Step 1
Time to break out the soldering iron! Make sure you have a heat-resistant surface and take it slow. Safety first, but you’ve got this!
– Lay the XLR cable on a surface that’s as clear as your mind should be before starting this repair – clutter-free!
– Next, grab your trusty mini screwdriver and carefully remove the tiny screw near the top of the cable. Don’t worry, it’s just one small screw to rule them all!
– Now, gently pry apart the outer metal casing from the inner mechanism. Easy does it, you’ve got this!

Step 2
– Take a moment to check which connections have come loose. In this case, the white cable decided to take a little vacation and is now disconnected.
Step 3
– Take a look at the wires—if there’s not enough exposed to work with, don’t sweat it. In this case, they’re just a tad too short to make a solid connection.
– When the wires are too short, grab some wire strippers or a razor and carefully peel back the insulation to give yourself more room.
– Gently separate the wires so you’ve got space to work.
Step 4
Soldering irons can get super toasty! So, be sure to take it easy and handle with care.

If the connection is being stubborn, try using a thin wire to get everything just right.
– Attach each loose wire to its matching metal prong with a bit of solder—make sure they’re snug and shiny!
Step 5
– Once your soldering masterpiece is done, pop the metal cover back onto the cable head.
– Grab a tiny screwdriver and snug that lone screw back into place.
