Apple Lisa Classic Mac 800K Floppy Drive Installation Guide

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 11 Steps

Step 1

– Check out the Apple Lisa Disassembly Guide to gently lift off the Lisa’s real panel.

– Carefully take out the Lisa’s Card Cage.

Step 2

– Time to liberate Lisa’s I/O Board! Look for those red-marked clips—they’re your ticket out.

– Gently release both clips that are keeping the I/O Board in place.

– Now, with a smooth motion, lift the I/O Board up and away. You’re doing great!

Step 3

– Spot the chip labeled U2A at location 2A.

– Carefully remove the ROM chip using your preferred chip removing tool. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 4

– Pop that 800K ROM into the empty socket you sorted out in step 3. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 5

– Let’s pop that I/O Board back in its cozy spot.

– Time to snug up the Card Cage and make it feel at home.

– Now, give Lisa’s rear panel a gentle reinstall so she can keep everything safe and sound.

Step 6

– To get started, follow the Apple Lisa Disassembly Guide to carefully remove the front panel of your Lisa. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair

Step 7

– Give that thumbscrew below the Drive Cage a little twist.

– Gently slide the Drive Cage out like you’re unveiling a surprise.

– Unplug any cables that are hanging on for dear life.

Step 8

– Time to get your screwdriver out! Go ahead and unscrew all the screws located on the bottom of the Drive Cage to detach that floppy drive. You’ve got this!

Step 9

– First up, let’s get that 800K Floppy Drive snugly attached to the 800K Drive Bracket. If you find yourself without an official bracket, no worries! You can totally get creative and whip one up yourself, just like the cool design shown in the image.

– Next, it’s time to reconnect all those Drive Cage wires. Make sure they’re all snug and secure!

– Finally, slide that Drive Cage back into the Lisa and give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!

Step 10

– Pop the front panel back on Lisa’s device.

Step 11

– If you don’t have the 800K driver installed, your 800K floppy drive will act like a 400K drive. Bummer, right?

– Heads up! MacWorks XL 3.0 and earlier versions don’t support the 800K functionality. But don’t worry, MacWorks Plus and MacWorks Plus II are here to save the day—they automatically support 800K functionality!

– For those rocking the Lisa Office System 3.0 or newer, good news! It supports 800K functionality, but you’ll need a driver for that.

– Looking for the driver? You can find it right here.

– The 800K driver floppy comes with the installer utility, so you’re just a step away from getting things up and running!
