Nintendo DS Lite Microphone Replacement
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 27 Steps
Bowser not breathing fire no matter how hard you blow into the mic? Swap out that faulty microphone and get back to torching everything in your path!
Step 1
The screw stays securely attached to the battery cover, so no need to worry about it falling out.
– Start by unscrewing that Phillips screw holding the battery cover in place—think of it as the lock to your phone’s secret stash.
– Once the screw is out, gently pry up the battery cover using a spudger or even your fingernail—careful now, no need to be too aggressive—and lift it away from the lower case to reveal the goodies inside.

Step 2
– Slide the spudger gently between the side of the battery and the lower case housing, then give a little pry to pop the battery free.
– Now, just lift that battery right out of the DS Lite and you’re good to go!

Step 3
– Gently pop off both rubber feet from your DS Lite using the tip of a spudger—easy does it!

Step 4
– Let’s kick things off by removing the screws that hold the lower case to your DS Lite’s body:
– Take out the two 4.3 mm gold Phillips screws.
– Unscrew the single 3.9 mm black Tri-point screw.
– Remove the one 3.3 mm silver Phillips screw.
– Finish up by taking out the three 5.5 mm silver Tri-point screws.
Step 5
Take off the cover from the Game Pak slot before moving forward. It’s a simple step, but definitely one you don’t want to skip!
– Slide the edge of a spudger between the upper and lower case at the top right corner of your DS Lite.
– Gently glide the spudger down the right side, popping open the seam as you go.
– Work your way along the back edge with the spudger until most of the lower case is free from the upper case.

Step 6
Gently pull. Some devices are glued together, so pulling too aggressively can damage the power switch.
When putting everything back together, make sure the power switch and volume sliders line up correctly with the motherboard switches.
– Gently lift the lower case away from the rest of the DS Lite. Keep a steady hand and peel it back carefully to avoid any cracks or snaps. If you need a hand, you can always schedule a repair.
Step 7
The second picture gives you the lowdown on how the trigger assembly should look when you’re putting everything back together—think of it as your visual checklist to keep things on point.
– Carefully lift both trigger buttons out of the DS Lite. These buttons are held in place by tiny metal pegs and springs, which are quite delicate. Be gentle and watch out for these small parts—losing track of them can happen easily. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.
Step 8
– Grab your spudger and gently slide the flat edge underneath the Wi-Fi antenna connector. Give it a little nudge to lift it straight up from its socket on the Wi-Fi board. Nice and easy—you’re doing great!

Step 12
You’ll need to thread the antenna cable between the DS Lite game cartridge reader and the motherboard in the next steps. Go slow, and if you feel any resistance, pause—yanking could mess up the cable or motherboard.
– Gently position the antenna cable with the connector facing up and away from the motherboard. Use a spudger to lightly secure it in the gap between the chips on the motherboard.
– Carefully pull the antenna cable, guiding the connector under the DS Lite game cartridge reader.
– Keep pulling until the cable connector slides out from under the game cartridge reader on the right side.
– When you’re reassembling and trying to slide the antenna cable back under the game cartridge reader, it might get a bit stubborn and kink up. If that happens, try using a piece of thread as a guide—just feed it through first, tie the thread to the end of the cable connector, and pull it through, making sure to guide it past any tricky spots.

Step 13
Gently flip up the retaining flap—not the whole socket. Trust me, your future self will thank you.
Keep that flap below a 90-degree angle, or it could snap off. No one wants a floppy connector!
– Gently pop up the locking flap on the touchscreen ribbon cable using your fingernail or the edge of a spudger—just a little nudge will do.
– Now, take the tip of your spudger and slide the ribbon cable straight out of its socket. Smooth moves!

Step 14
– Start by grabbing your Phillips screwdriver and carefully remove those two 3.4 mm screws holding the motherboard snugly to the upper case. Keep them safe—you’ll need them later!
Step 15
Hold up! Don’t yank out the motherboard just yet – it’s still connected to the upper display through that LCD ribbon cable. Take it easy and proceed with caution!
– Gently lift the display just enough to give your finger enough space to nudge the front edge of the motherboard upwards and away from the upper case.
Step 16
Remember, it’s the retaining flap you’re flipping up, not the socket itself. Make sure you’re on the right part!
– Gently use your fingernail or the flat side of a spudger to pop up the retaining flap on the upper LCD ribbon cable.
– Slide the motherboard away from your DS Lite to unplug the upper LCD ribbon cable from its spot.
– Take the motherboard out of the DS Lite.
– Now, open up the retaining flap for the lower LCD screen just like before, and disconnect the lower LCD screen from the motherboard.

Step 17
– Take out the two 8.3 mm Phillips screws holding the upper case to the display assembly.
Step 18
– Gently slide the upper LCD ribbon cable to the right, threading it through the slot in the case.
– Guide the ribbon cable downward so it slips right through the slot.
Step 19
– Gently lift the upper case away from the display, but be careful not to let that ribbon cable get snagged. Keep it smooth and steady!
Step 20
– Gently guide the ribbon cable out of the upper case, then thread the antenna and Wi-Fi cables through the opening in the upper case.
– Lift off the upper case from your DS Lite. Smooth sailing!
Step 21
– Grab a push pin and gently pop off the four plastic screw covers on the front bezel. Easy does it!

Step 22
– Unscrew the four 3.4 mm Phillips screws holding the rear display bezel in place, and say goodbye to that pesky bezel!
Step 23
– Grab your trusty spudger and gently pop out both rubber pads from the front edge of the display bezel.

Step 24
The rear bezel will only budge about 2 mm—just a little wiggle, so don’t force anything.
– With both hands, gently slide the rear bezel upward like you’re giving it a little nudge to get things moving.
Step 25
– Gently insert a spudger into the gap between the front and rear display bezels, then carefully pry the front bezel away from the rear. Take your time to avoid cracks.
– Lift the rear display bezel away from the display assembly, revealing what’s underneath. Keep it steady as you work.

Step 26
The magnets in the speakers are like built-in organizers—they keep everything neatly in place and out of your way for the next steps. Just a little magnetic magic to keep things tidy as you work.
– Gently use the spudger’s tip to lift both speakers from their housing, then carefully set them down on the back of the LCD. Easy does it!

Step 27
Hold off on removing the LCD just yet! The ribbon cable is still snugly routed through the front display bezel, so let’s make sure we don’t yank anything out of place.
– Start from the top right corner and gently use both hands to pry the LCD away from the front bezel. Go slow, we’re in no rush!
– Next, work your way across the top and down the left edges, slowly separating the LCD from the bezel like a pro.
– Lastly, give the LCD a gentle push upwards and away from the bezel. Easy does it!
