Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 45 Steps
Hey there, repair champ! Just a friendly reminder: take your time and double-check each step. If you run into any bumps along the way, don’t hesitate to schedule a repair. You’ve got this!
Get ready to give your device a little boost! This guide will walk you through the steps to swap out that home button assembly. If you find yourself in a jam, don’t hesitate to schedule a repair!
Step 1
It’s a great idea to give your microwave a quick clean before you dive in! That way, any stubborn gunk on the bottom won’t hitch a ride on your iOpener.
– Pop the iOpener right in the middle of your microwave and let it warm up.

Step 2
Hey there! Just a friendly reminder to keep an eye on the iOpener during your repair adventure. Overheating could lead to a surprise burst, and we definitely want to avoid that! Aim to keep it under 100˚C (212˚F).
If the iOpener looks a bit puffy, it’s best to steer clear of it for your safety.
If the middle of the iOpener is still too toasty to handle, just hang tight and let it cool a little more before you give it another heat-up. A well-heated iOpener should stay cozy for about 10 minutes.
– Give that iOpener a cozy thirty-second warm-up in the microwave.
– As you dive into the repair, keep an eye on the iOpener; when it starts to cool down, just pop it back in the microwave for another thirty seconds to keep things toasty!

Step 3
The iOpener gets super toasty, so handle it with care! An oven mitt can be your best buddy here if things get a bit too hot to handle.
– Carefully take the iOpener out of the microwave, gripping one of the two flat ends to steer clear of the hot center. Stay safe and keep it cool!

Step 4
Don’t have a microwave? No problem! Just pop that iOpener into a pot of boiling water and let the heat work its magic.
– Grab a pot or pan and fill it with enough water to completely dunk that iOpener.
– Bring the water to a rolling boil, then turn off the heat—you’re doing great!
– Submerge the iOpener in the hot water for about 2-3 minutes. Just make sure it’s all the way under the surface!
– Using tongs (safety first!), carefully pull the warmed iOpener out of the hot water.
– Give the iOpener a good towel dry—it deserves it!
– And voilà! Your iOpener is all set for action! If it needs a little more heat, just repeat the boiling process: heat the water, turn off the heat, and let it soak again for 2-3 minutes. Easy peasy!

Step 5
Put on those safety glasses to keep your peepers protected, and watch out for that LCD screen – we want it in one piece!
– If your screen is sporting some cracks, let’s keep those pesky shards in check and avoid any injuries while you work your magic by applying some tape to the glass.
– Grab some clear packing tape and lay it down in overlapping strips over the iPad’s display until you’ve got the whole face covered like a protective shield.
– Try your best to stick to the rest of the guide as we go along. Just a heads up, once the glass starts to crack, it may keep on breaking as you work, so you might need to use a metal prying tool to help scoop out the glass. No worries, you’ve got this!
Step 6
Just a friendly reminder: while you’re getting hands-on with that broken glass, it’s a smart move to rock some safety glasses. They’ll keep those pesky shards at bay and help you stay safe while you work your magic!
– Place the iOpener flat against the right edge of your iPad, making sure it’s snug and cozy for a good connection.
– Give it about 90 seconds to warm up before you start prying open the front panel.

Step 7
Getting that wedged tip of the opening tool in between the glass and plastic might take a little muscle. Just take your time and be gentle—wiggle that plastic tool back and forth as needed, and you’ll be on your way to a smooth repair.
– Check it out! There’s a tiny gap in the adhesive ring at the upper right corner of your iPad, about 2.0 inches (~5 cm) from the top. We’re going to take advantage of this little flaw.
– Now, grab your trusty tool and line it up with the mute button. Gently slide the tip of your plastic opening tool into that gap between the front glass and the plastic bezel. Just insert the very tip—enough to give that crack a little nudge!
Step 9
– With the tip of your trusty plastic opening tool snugly positioned between the front glass and plastic bezel, gently slide a plastic opening pick into that little gap, right alongside the plastic tool. You’re doing great!
Step 10
– Gently take out the plastic opening tool from your iPad and slide that opening pick in a bit deeper, about half an inch under the front glass. You’re doing great!
Step 12
The adhesive is super strong, so you might need to channel your inner superhero. Just take it slow and steady!
If you spot the tip of the opening pick peeking out from under the front glass, give it a gentle tug. No worries—using the pick at this depth is safe, but just a heads up: it might leave a bit of adhesive goo on the LCD. Keep it cool, and if you need help, you can always schedule a repair.
– While the bottom edge is warming up with the iOpener, let’s start peeling away that adhesive from the right edge of the iPad.
– Gently slide the opening pick down along the edge of the iPad, making sure to free up that sticky adhesive as you go.

Step 13
You might want to slide that warm iOpener back over to the right edge of your iPad while peeling off the adhesive. The need for this depends on how long your iPad has been chilling while you’ve been busy working on it.
– If your trusty opening pick seems to be stuck in that stubborn adhesive, just give it a little ‘roll’ along the side of the iPad. Keep at it, and you’ll be freeing up that adhesive in no time!

Step 14
– Before you dive in and pull out that first opening pick from the bottom corner of the iPad, slide a second pick under the right edge of the front glass. This little buddy will help keep the adhesive from sticking back together.
– Give your iOpener a little re-heat love, and then move it on up to the top edge of the iPad. You’re doing great!

Step 15
Hey there! Just a heads up: the Wi-Fi antenna is snugly secured to the bottom right edge of your iPad’s rear case with screws and a cable. Given how it’s positioned, it’s super important to handle this with care—otherwise, you might end up causing some serious damage to the antenna. Let’s keep things safe and sound!
– Time to put on your repair hat! As we move ahead, let’s tread lightly.
– You’ll need to carefully detach the adhesive that’s holding the antenna to the front panel. Just be gentle with those delicate bits connecting the antenna to the bottom of the iPad. Take your time and follow the upcoming steps with care!
Step 16
Hey there! Just a friendly reminder: don’t slide that pick too far into the bottom right corner. You might accidentally mess with the Wi-Fi antenna, and we wouldn’t want that!
– Gently slide that trusty opening pick around the bottom right corner of your iPad to release the sticky adhesive. You’re doing great!
Step 17
Be super careful as you glide that opening pick along the bottom right edge of the front panel! The Wi-Fi antenna is hanging out near the corner, and if you’re not careful with the adhesive, it could get a little too cozy with the pick. Let’s keep everything intact!
Just gently wiggle that pick out from under the front glass—no need to go all the way! Leave about 1/8″ (3 mm) of the tip cozy under there. You’ve got this!
– Gently glide the opening pick along the bottom edge of your iPad to free up the adhesive over the Wi-Fi antenna. You’ve got this!
Step 18
– Alright, once you’ve cruised past the Wi-Fi antenna (that’s about 3 inches from the right edge, or right by the home button), pop that opening pick back in all the way.
– Now, gently slide the pick to the right to free the adhesive that’s holding the Wi-Fi antenna to the front glass. You’ve got this!
Step 19
Keep it cool! Don’t heat the iOpener for more than a minute at a time, and give it at least two minutes to chill before you heat it up again.
If the adhesive is feeling a bit chilly along the bottom edge, just give that iOpener a quick reheat to warm things up where you’re working your magic.
– Keep gently releasing the adhesive along the bottom of the iPad. Make sure to pull the opening pick out far enough to glide around the home button. Once you’ve passed the home button, reinsert the pick to a depth of about 1/2 inch (10 mm). You’re doing great!

Step 20
– Keep peeling away that sticky stuff along the bottom edge of your iPad like a pro!
– Make sure to keep that opening pick snugly in place under the front glass near the home button.
Step 22
If the adhesive is feeling a bit chilly, just pop the iOpener back along the top edge and keep at it! If the iOpener has lost its warmth, give it a little reheat and you’re good to go!
– Gently slide the opening pick along the top edge of your iPad, giving it a little tug to navigate around the front-facing camera bracket.
– This section has some pretty strong adhesive, so don’t be shy about using a bit of elbow grease! Just take it slow and steady to avoid any mishaps that could harm either you or your iPad.
– If your opening pick seems to be getting a bit stuck in the adhesive, try giving it a little ‘roll’ just like we showed you in step 9.

Step 23
If the adhesive is nice and toasty, feel free to take the iOpener off the iPad for easier handling. But if it’s still sticking around a bit too much, just give that iOpener another heat-up and place it on the left edge while you work your magic.
– Keep peeling away the sticky stuff at the top of the iPad, and gently work your opening pick around that top left corner like you’re playing a game of phone Tetris.

Step 24
The digitizer cable is hanging out around 2″ (50 mm) from the bottom of the iPad. When you reach about 2.25″ (60 mm) from the bottom, it’s time to stop sliding that pick—you’re doing great!
– Gently slide your trusty opening pick along the left edge of your iPad, carefully peeling away the adhesive as you go. The adhesive here is quite thin thanks to the digitizer that runs along the entire left side. Just remember to keep the pick no deeper than half an inch (about 10 mm) to avoid any accidental damage to that digitizer. You’ve got this!
Step 25
Be super careful here! The bottom of the digitizer cable is just about 1 inch (25 mm) away from the bottom of the iPad. Take your time and handle it gently to avoid cutting this cable.
– With that trusty opening pick still snugly under the bottom edge of your iPad, gently coax the adhesive free at the bottom left corner.
Step 26
– Take an opening pick and gently lift the bottom right corner of your iPad. Then, give it a little pinch with your fingers to hold it steady.
Step 27
Watch out for any stubborn adhesive that might still be hanging around! Grab an opening pick and gently slice through any sticky spots keeping that front panel in place.
– Grab your iPad by the top and bottom right corners and gently twist that front glass away like you’re unveiling a surprise!
– When putting it back together, give your LCD some love! Use a microfiber cloth and a puff of compressed air to banish any dust bunnies or fingerprints before you seal the glass back on.
Step 28
The bottom left screw is hiding behind the home button ribbon cable connector. Gently nudge that ribbon cable to the side so you can access and remove the elusive bottom left screw.
– Unscrew the four 2 mm Phillips #00 screws that are holding the LCD in place against the aluminum frame. You’ve got this!
Step 29
Handle the LCD with care! That ribbon cable is delicate and could snap if you bend it too much. Keep it cool and steady!
– Grab a plastic opening tool or a spudger and gently lift the right edge of the LCD out of the iPad. You’re doing great!
– Now, swing that LCD around on its left edge and let it rest on the front glass panel. Almost there!

Step 30
– Grab your trusty spudger and gently lift the tape that’s snugly holding down the LCD ribbon cable connector. You’re doing great!

Step 31
– Gently lift the little flap on the LCD ribbon cable ZIF connector—it’s just waiting for you to give it a nudge.
– With a careful touch, use your fingers or some tweezers to pull the LCD ribbon cable out of its cozy spot on the logic board. It’ll be like a little magic trick!
Tools Used
Step 32
– Gently lift the LCD away from the front panel, being careful not to touch the screen. You’ve got this!
Step 33
If you’ve got some electrical tape hanging out, go ahead and peel it off! It’s covering the Wi-Fi antenna, speaker cable, and home button ribbon cable, so let’s free those guys up.
Step 34
– Gently lift the retaining flap on the home button ribbon cable ZIF connector.
Step 35
– Grab your trusty tweezers and gently wiggle that home button ribbon cable until it pops out of its cozy socket on the logic board. You’ve got this!

Step 36
– Gently pull the home button ribbon cable out from its cozy spot in the rear case.
Step 37
– Grab a trusty pair of tweezers and gently lift the tape that’s holding the digitizer ribbon cable snugly to the logic board. You’ve got this!
Tools Used
Step 38
– Gently lift the retaining flap on each of the digitizer ribbon cable ZIF connectors.
Step 39
– Grab that trusty spudger and gently slide the flat end under the digitizer ribbon cable to loosen up that adhesive. You’ve got this!
– Now, with a steady hand, pull the digitizer ribbon cable straight out from its cozy little sockets on the logic board. Easy peasy!
Tools Used
Step 40
– Gently lift the digitizer ribbon cable and grab your trusty spudger to carefully break the adhesive that’s keeping the cable snug against the rear aluminum case.
Tools Used
Step 41
– Give that digitizer ribbon cable a gentle tug with your fingers and pull it out of its cozy spot in the aluminum frame.
– Now, it’s time to liberate the front panel from your iPad. Just lift it off and let it be free!
Step 42
Keep an eye on that iOpener! We suggest taking a breather for at least two minutes before giving it another heat-up. Your device will thank you for it!
The home button assembly is glued to the front panel, so it’s like a little sticker that needs some extra love to come off. We highly suggest using an iOpener to warm things up and make that adhesive a bit less clingy!
– Pop that iOpener in the microwave for a solid minute on high power (or just thirty seconds if you’re rocking the newer gel-filled version).
– Now, gently place the warmed iOpener right over the home button on the front edge of the display.
Tools Used
Step 43
– Gently lift that home button ribbon cable away from the front panel like you’re peeling a sticker off a fresh notebook!
Step 44
– Gently slide the plastic opening tool under the right side of the home button assembly and give it a little nudge upwards to free that adhesive like a boss.
– Now, using the same technique, go ahead and release the adhesive on the left side of the home button. You’re doing great!
– Carefully lift the home button mount off the front panel. You’re almost there!
Step 45
– Gently slide the edge of your trusty plastic opening tool under the lip of the home button mounting bracket.
– Carefully glide the tool along the retaining spring bracket to free up that pesky adhesive.
– Pop the home button with its mounting bracket right out from the front panel!
