How To Replace iPad 3G Metal Display Clips – DIY Guide

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 12 Steps

Follow this guide to swap out those pesky little metal clips that might decide to break while you’re taking off the display assembly. You’ve got this! And if you find yourself in a bind, remember, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 1

– If your display glass is cracked, let’s keep those shards in check and protect yourself while you tackle this repair by applying some tape to the glass.

– Grab some clear packing tape and lay down overlapping strips over the iPad’s display until you’ve covered the whole face. It’s like giving your device a protective shield!

– Do your best to follow the guide as we go along. Just a heads up, once the glass starts to break, it might keep cracking as you work. You might find it handy to use a metal prying tool to scoop out the pieces.

Step 2

– Gently slide a metal spudger in between the right edge of the display assembly and the rear panel assembly. You’re doing great!

– Now, give that spudger a little twist away from you to pop those tabs loose along the top edge of the display. Keep it up!

Tools Used
  1. Metal Spudger

Step 4

– Keep gently working your way around the bottom and left edges of the iPad, carefully separating the display assembly from the rear panel. You’re doing great!

Step 5

– Gently lift the display assembly from the rear panel assembly by its bottom edge. You’ve got this!

Step 6

– Grab your trusty spudger and gently lift the antenna connector that’s hanging out closest to the bottom of the iPad. Wiggle it free from its cozy spot on the communications board. You’ve got this!

Step 7

– Alright, let’s get ready to dive in! In the upcoming steps, we’re going to gently disconnect the three cables that link the display assembly to the logic board. These cables are responsible for some pretty important components, so let’s handle them with care!

Step 8

– Grab your trusty iPod opening tool and gently nudge those retaining flaps up to release the digitizer ribbon cables from their cozy homes on the logic board.

– Now, give those digitizer ribbon cables a straight pull to free them from their sockets. Easy peasy!

Step 9

– Grab your trusty iPod opening tool and gently coax the ambient light sensor connector out of its socket by prying it upward with a little finesse. You’ve got this!

Step 10

– Time to disconnect that display data cable from the main board! Just flip up the metal retainer using the nifty black plastic pull tab.

– Once that’s done, gently pull the cable connector away from its cozy socket.

Step 11

– Carefully detach the display assembly from the back panel assembly. Make sure to do it gently, like you’re peeling a banana, to keep everything intact!

Step 12

– As you dive into removing the display assembly, keep in mind that those little metal clips hanging out around the edges might not make it through the process unscathed.

– If you find a clip has taken a tumble, no worries! Just unscrew the T5 Torx screw that’s holding the broken clip base to the display assembly.

– Next, pop a shiny new clip onto the positioning pins that are molded into the display frame, and don’t forget to reinstall that T5 Torx screw to keep everything snug and secure!
