Chromebook Pixel Disassembly

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 5 Steps

Grab a couple of small Phillips screwdrivers—two different sizes should cover all the bases for swapping out your screen.

Step 1

– First up, grab a soft cloth, an old sweater, or a felt mat to create a cozy work surface. We want to keep that beautiful case finish looking sharp and scratch-free!

– Make sure you’re working in a well-lit area. Good lighting means better photos, and who doesn’t want to see a clear guide? Let’s show off those details!

Step 2

– Flip your laptop over and take a look at the rubber strips running from end to end. They’re there for a reason, so don’t just ignore them!

– Gently use your fingernails or the edge of a credit card or a spudger to pry up one of the strips from the corner. Peel it off carefully—slow and steady wins the race.

– If you’re careful and get it just right, the sticky strip should stay in one piece. You can reuse it unless it gets too dusty or, you know, the cat decides it’s a toy.

– Now, grab your screwdriver and start removing the MANY screws holding the base plate in place. Set them aside and don’t mix them up—trust us, you’ll thank us later.

Step 3

– Pop off the base plate—start at a corner or use a suction cup if you want to keep things easy-breezy.

– Snap a photo of the inside so you can remember where all those colorful screws go. (Bonus points for appreciating the rainbow.)

– Disconnect the battery before you touch anything else. Trust me, it’s the difference between a happy laptop and a toasted one.

– Gently unplug the display cables from the motherboard: you’ll find a video cable, a touchscreen cable, and a couple of tiny connectors for wireless. Check the second image for exact spots.

– Unscrew the green screws holding the screen hinges to the case. There are several, and each side has one with a little metal clip for grounding or cable management—don’t lose those clips! See the second image for where they’re hiding.

– Swap your old screen with the shiny new one (probably sourced from eBay), then carefully reconnect the video, touch, and wireless cables.

– If you’re feeling steady-handed, test your new screen and touch functions without screwing everything back together. Otherwise, put in a few screws to keep things secure before flipping the laptop over. If things get tricky, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 4

– Secure the remaining hinge screws, making sure the clips line up with the correct screws so your cables have enough slack to reach comfortably.

– Double-check that all cables are firmly plugged into the motherboard, then carefully replace the base plate, ensuring the FCC/CE label faces the hinge side of the laptop.

– Reinstall all the screws into the baseplate, tightening them gently but securely.

– Gently press the rubber strips back into their channels—initially, they’ll feel a bit too long. Use a firm, consistent stroke from one end to the other, like an inchworm, to ease them into place smoothly.

Step 5

– Here are some shots of both sides of the motherboard, where you can really appreciate the engineers’ sense of humor and the impressive attention to detail they put into their work.

Success!
