DIY Guide to Replace iPhone 8 Plus Screen – Step-by-Step

Duration: 60 min.
Steps: 22 Steps

Welcome to your guide for swapping out that pesky display on your iPhone 8 Plus! If your screen is cracked, 3D Touch is playing hard to get, or the LCD has decided to take a permanent vacation, it’s time for a change. Before diving into this adventure, make sure to back up all your precious data and give yourself a little static charge release by touching something metal, like a radiator. Let’s get that screen replaced and bring your iPhone back to life!

Step 1

– First things first, let’s power down your iPhone completely. We want to keep it safe and sound during this repair mission! Just press and hold that Sleep/Wake button for about three seconds until you see the ‘power off’ slider pop up.

– Now, give that slider a gentle swipe from left to right. Your iPhone will take a little breather and shut down completely, which should take around ten seconds. Hang tight!

Step 2

– Let’s tackle those two pentalobe screws at the bottom of the enclosure! They’re hanging out to the right and left of the Lightning connector. Make sure to stash those screws in the same section of your magnetic pad so they don’t go on an adventure without you!

Step 3

– First, let’s give your iPhone 8 Plus a comfy spot on a soft, clean surface. We want to keep that back scratch-free!

– To lift the front panel, grab a suction cup, a hard plastic pick, and a heat gun. If the screen is looking a bit worse for wear, cover it with packing tape to keep everything together before you dive in.

– The screen is glued tight to the frame, so let’s warm things up! Use the heat gun to heat the outer edges of the display to around 60°C (140°F).

– Now, place the suction cup over the Home button (if you can) or right next to it. While gently pulling up with the suction cup, slide that hard plastic pick between the aluminum frame and the display frame. Remember, the display is glued on, so you’ll need to slide the pick all around the iPhone. Just be careful not to go too deep near the Sleep/Wake button to avoid damaging those delicate flex cables.

– With the pick in hand, gently lever the display until the tabs pop out of the aluminum frame. You can then fold the display to the side.

– Lean the display against a stable object to keep those sensitive flex cables from bending too much. We’re almost there!

Step 4

– Grab your trusty Phillips screwdriver (Ph00) and let’s tackle those Phillips screws! Once they’re out of the way, gently lift off the cover. Remember to keep all those tiny parts cozy in the same section of your magnetic pad.

– Now, it’s time to delicately lift off the battery contact! Just slide a plastic spudger in gently below the connector and lift it away with care.

Step 5

Step 6

– Grab your Y-Type screwdriver (Y000) and let’s tackle those two Y-Type screws! Once they’re out, gently lift off the cover. Don’t forget to keep all the parts cozy in the same section of your magnetic pad.

– Now, using a spudger, carefully disconnect the FaceTime contact from the PCB. You’re doing great!

– And just like that, you can now take off the display completely. Keep up the awesome work!

Step 7

– The earpiece is nestled right on the back of the display unit. Let’s unscrew those Phillips screws holding the cover in place. Remember to keep all the parts in the same cozy section of your magnetic pad!

– Now, the earpiece is hanging out under the front camera’s flexible flat cable. Just give that cable a gentle nudge to the side, and you’ll be able to lift out the earpiece with ease.

Step 8

– First, slide that spudger or spatula right under the flex cable and gently disconnect it. It’s got a snug fit, so take your time!

– Next up, carefully lift out the sensors. They’re just waiting to be freed!

– Now, let’s tackle the piece with the four golden contacts. Use your spatula to remove it with care.

– And just like that, you can now take out the cable set. You’re doing awesome!

Step 9

– Remove the four Y-type screws. Now remove the silver cover. Put everything in the same section of your magnetic pad.

– Using the spudger, carefully disconnect the contact of the Home button cable. If necessary, press it against the display because the contact isn’t screwed in place.

Step 10

– Alright, let’s get those Y-type screws and that one Phillips screw out of the way so we can free the metal cover! It’s time for a little screw party!

– Next up, peel off those pesky stickers from the display contacts on the metal cover. They’ve done their job, and now it’s time for them to go!

– Now, gently lift off the metal cover. You’re doing fantastic!

Step 11

– Not all displays are created equal! If your new screen is missing some of the cool features from your old display, you might need to snag a few parts before you make the swap. Here’s what you might need to take: the front camera bracket (it’s just lightly glued, so it should come off easily) and the sensor bracket (also lightly glued).

– If you only need the front camera bracket, go ahead and take that off.

– Need the sensor bracket? You got it! Just gently remove that too.

– Don’t forget to peel off the protective film from your new display and take off any seals. You’re almost there!

Step 12

– Guide those flex cables through the cozy little opening in the rear panel. They’ll appreciate the nice fit!

– Now, it’s time to reinsert those screws and secure the rear panel back in place. You’re doing great!

Step 13

– Slide the Home button into the display opening from the front like a pro.

– Gently press the flex cable onto the display and connect that little connector.

– Pop on the shiny silver cover and secure it with screws to keep everything in place.

Step 14

– Nestle each of those sensors into their cozy brackets.

– Connect the flex cable for the earpiece using those handy little plastic tips to help guide you.

– Slide the FaceTime cable back into its original home.

Step 15

– Place the earpiece back in its cozy spot right below the flexible flat cable, nestled between the FaceTime camera and the sensors.

– Next, pop the cover back on and secure it with those five Phillips screws. Just a friendly reminder: make sure the front camera is perfectly centered on the display. Adjust it a smidge if needed!

Step 16

– To ensure that your new frame sticker sticks like a charm, first, let’s clean off any leftover glue and dirt. We want a fresh start!

– Peel off the first layer of protective film from the frame sticker. It’s like unwrapping a gift!

– Carefully align the frame sticker on one edge and press it down gradually. Make sure it’s even and give it a gentle press to secure it in place.

– Now, go ahead and remove the rest of the film layers. You’re almost there!

Step 17

– Gently set the display onto the frame and connect the FaceTime contact to the logic board. You’re doing great!

– Now, pop the FaceTime contact’s cover back into the iPhone and secure it with those three Phillips screws. Almost there!

Step 18

– Connect the two contacts from the Home button and the display to the logic board, ensuring a snug fit for a smooth operation. You’re doing great!

Step 19

– Reconnect the battery contact with a gentle touch, making sure it’s snug and secure!

– Place that metal cover back on your iPhone and fasten it down with the screws like a pro!

Step 20

– Set the display gently on the edge of the frame and fold it down onto the iPhone like a pro!

– Next, give that entire display a nice firm press into the frame to secure it snugly.

Step 21

– Time to bring out your trusty screwdriver! Let’s secure those two pentalobe screws snugly into the enclosure, right next to the Lightning connector. Make sure they’re in tight so your iPhone stays all put together and ready for action!

Step 22

– Let’s check out how bright that display can shine!

– Now, it’s time to give the touchscreen a whirl! Pick an app, drag it all over the screen, and if it keeps up with your finger like a loyal sidekick, then your display is in great shape!
