DIY Tutorial: MacBook Pro 15 Keyboard Replacement Guide

Get ready to uncover those sneaky screws hiding out of sight! This guide will help you find and remove them so you can swap out that keyboard like a pro. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 1

– Give those battery release tabs a gentle nudge with your fingers, pushing them away from the battery. Then, lift that battery out of the computer like a pro!

– Unscrew the three matching Phillips screws from the memory door. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair

– Gently lift the memory door just enough to get a good grip, then slide it towards you to pop it away from the casing. You’ve got this!

– Unscrew the two 2.8 mm Phillips screws in the battery compartment near the latch. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

– Time to get your screwdriver ready! Let’s tackle those 6 screws and get this repair party started!

– Give your computer a little twist and turn it 90 degrees! Next up, let’s unscrew those two 3.2 mm Phillips screws hanging out at the back. You’ve got this!

– Give your computer a little twist and turn it 90 degrees once more. Now, let’s tackle those four 3.2 mm Phillips screws on the side. Time to show them who’s boss!

Step 9

– Time to lift and show that case who’s boss! Start at the back, run your fingers along the sides like you’re dancing through a maze. Free the case as you go. Once the sides are loose, get ready to rock n’ roll – gently move the case up and down to release the front of the upper case. Those sneaky hidden plastic clips need to be serenaded off. Now go work your magic, repair wizard!

– Unplug the trackpad and keyboard ribbon cable from the logic board, peeling off tape if needed.

– Lift off the upper case.

– Grab a spudger—it’s time to gently lift the cool plastic cover protecting the keyboard connection.

– Gently use the tip of a spudger to lift up the black plastic flaps that are keeping the keyboard and keyboard backlight ribbon cables snug and secure. You’ve got this!

– Gently slide the orange keyboard backlight ribbon out of its connector. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

– Gently lift the orange tape that’s keeping the keyboard backlight connector snug and secure.

Step 15

– Use your trusty spudger to gently lift the brown plastic flap securing the keyboard backlight ribbon cable.

– Grab a spudger or use your finger to gently slide that keyboard backlight ribbon out of its connector. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.

Step 17

– Gently lift the orange ribbon cable that carries the power and sleep signals, and don’t forget to peel off any tape that might be in your way!

Step 18

– Gently peel back the black protective cover on the right side of the upper case. No need to take it off completely—just pull it back enough to reveal the screws hiding underneath. You’ve got this!

– Gently lift the black protective cover on the left side of the upper case. No need to take it all the way off—just peel it back enough to reveal those sneaky screws hiding underneath.

Step 20

– Time to get your screwdriver ready! Unscrew those ten identical Phillips screws that are holding the keyboard snugly to the casing. You’ve got this!

– To free the keyboard, give a little love to the four locking tabs waiting patiently along its back edge. Show them some kindness by straightening them out gently before lifting off the keyboard and setting it free.

Step 22

– First up, take a peek at the initial frame where the tab is chilling in the ‘locked’ position. Then, check out the next frame where that same tab is living its best life in the ‘unlocked’ position!

– Grab some needlenose pliers or a trusty spudger and give each of those four tabs a little bend so they can all join the ‘unlocked’ party!

Step 23

– Gently wiggle that keyboard ribbon and slide it right out of its cozy connector. You’ve got this!

Step 24

– Prop the upper casing on its side and use a spudger to gently nudge the keyboard away from the casing by poking it through the central keyboard screw hole. Hold onto the keyboard as it starts to come free from the casing.

– With a firm grip on the keyboard, gently lay the casing down and flex the keyboard slightly until the tabs on each side pop free.

– Carefully slide the keyboard away from the trackpad and remove it from the upper case.

– As you reverse the process to install the new keyboard, be sure to delicately place the keyboard ribbon and keyboard backlight ribbon in their corresponding slots in the upper case before securing the tabs on each side of the keyboard back in place.
