DIY Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Optical Drive Replacement Guide
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 23 Steps
First things first, power down and unplug all cables—safety first, friend!
Time to channel your inner tech wizard: you’ll need to de-solder and solder two wires. You’ve got this!
Ready to give your Xbox Series X (2TB Galaxy Black edition) a little TLC? Let’s swap out that faulty optical drive! First things first, make sure to power down your console and unplug all those cables. Safety first, right? Keep those electrostatic discharge (ESD) safety practices in mind while diving into this repair. Now, the magic happens inside the optical drive where a board is linked to the console’s motherboard. To get everything up and running smoothly, you’ll need to transfer this board to the new optical drive. This means doing a little de-soldering and soldering of two wires. Don’t forget your soldering safety game—grab those safety glasses, work in a breezy spot, and wash your hands with soap and water after the job. If you find yourself in a pickle, you can always schedule a repair!
Step 1
First things first, make sure your console is completely powered down and unplugged from all its cables before diving in!
– Grab a trusty pair of tweezers and gently peel away the sticker that’s keeping the first screw on the back panel under wraps, right near the base. You’ve got this!

Step 2
To make sticker removal a breeze, grab an iOpener or a hair dryer to warm it up a bit.
Just peel back the sticker enough to reveal the hidden screw—no need to take it all the way off.
These stickers are technically tamper-evident, but no worries—Microsoft can’t void your warranty as long as you keep everything intact. Enjoy the process!
– Grab a pair of blunt tweezers and gently lift that big sticker off the back panel to uncover the hidden second screw. You’ve got this!

Step 3
As you dive into this repair adventure, remember to keep a close eye on every screw! Make sure each little guy finds its way back home to avoid any mishaps with your console.
– Grab your trusty T8 Torx driver and let’s get those two 7.4 mm-long screws out of the way to free the back panel!
Step 5
– Let’s start by gently inserting the flat end of your spudger into the gap between the back panel and the shell. You’ll find the perfect spot near the right side of the base.
– Now, it’s time to give that back panel a little encouragement! Pry it up carefully to release it from those locking clips. You got this!
Tools Used
Step 6
– Grab the back panel right where you made the opening and gently pull it upwards and away from the shell to release those long edges.
– When putting everything back together, give a little press along the edges of the back panel to snap it securely into place.
Step 7
The back panel fits snugly into a groove at the top of the shell.
– Give that back panel a little nudge and lift it up from the top. It’s just hanging on by a thread, and it’ll pop right off.
– And with that, the back panel is history! Time to move on to the next step.
Step 9
You might need to give that locking tab a little nudge to keep it open while you get the base going.
Once it’s locked in place, the “Hello from Seattle” line should be hanging out parallel with the device’s sides.
– Grab hold of the base and give it a little twist counterclockwise to loosen it from the shell. It’s like you’re opening a treasure chest!
– Now you can gently remove the base.
– When you’re putting things back together, line up those base tabs with their holes on the shell and twist clockwise until it clicks into place. You’ve got this!
Step 10
– Grab your trusty T8 Torx driver and let’s get to work! You’ll need to unscrew the two 8.8 mm screws that hold the optical drive’s vibration isolator snugly in place. One screw is chilling on the base, while the other is hanging out on the top of the isolator. Let’s make sure everything is nice and secure!
Step 11
The vibration isolator is holding onto the optical drive like a champ! It’s using those silicone pads to grip the sides, so you might need to gently slide it off, one side at a time.
– Gently lift the optical drive’s vibration isolator to set it free.
– When putting everything back together, make sure to press the vibration isolator down snugly around both edges of the optical drive, so it sits perfectly flush with the rest of the center chassis.
Step 12
Be careful with those cables! Always pull them by the connectors and never the wires. You don’t want to make a mess of things, right?
– Grab a pair of blunt tweezers and gently pinch the edges of the optical drive power connector. Give it a little tug upwards to disconnect it from the optical drive.
– Now, using your fingers, carefully pull up to disconnect the data cable from the optical drive. You’ve got this!

Step 13
If the drive isn’t lined up just right, that top vibration isolator will throw a tantrum and refuse to install properly. Plus, the disc reader might end up playing hide-and-seek with the front of your console.
– Grab the top of the optical drive and gently pull it out of its slot in the shell. It’s like giving your device a little hug and saying ‘bye for now’.
– When you put the optical drive back in, make sure the little pegs on the bottom line up with the holes on the bottom of the shell. It’s like a little dance, you gotta get those pegs in the right spots.
Step 14
– Grab your trusty Phillips screwdriver and get ready to tackle those four 3.6 mm screws holding down the optical drive cover. You’ve got this!
Step 15
– Let’s get this show on the road! Give that optical drive cover a gentle lift straight up and it’ll come right off. You got this!
Step 16
– Grab your trusty spudger and gently use its pointed end to lift the hinged locking tab on the large ribbon cable’s ZIF connector. You’ve got this!

Step 19
When you’re disconnecting those ribbon cables, remember to gently pull them straight out of their connectors, following the cable’s direction. You’ve got this!
– Grab a pair of blunt tweezers and gently wiggle them to detach each of the three ribbon cables from their cozy connectors. It’s like giving them a little nudge to say, ‘Time to go!’

Step 20
Keep it safe and sound! Make sure to rock those safety goggles, breathe easy in a fresh space, and give those hands a good wash after soldering – we want you to stay squeaky clean!
Watch out for the heat! Too much can fry your precious components. Just a gentle touch with the soldering iron will do the trick – let’s not overstay our welcome on that board!
– Grab your soldering iron and get ready to say goodbye to that pesky red wire in the corner of the optical drive board. Desolder it, buddy!
– Now, let’s do the same thing with the black wire right next to it. Use your trusty pair of blunt tweezers to gently pull those wires away from the board.
– When you’re ready to install the original board into the new optical drive, get those wires soldered back on. Make sure the red wire goes to the solder pad labeled R and the black wire goes to the solder pad labeled B. You got this!

Step 21
– Grab your trusty Phillips screwdriver and let’s get to work! Unscrew those three screws that are 3.3 mm long, holding the optical drive board in place. You’ve got this!
Step 22
– Gently lift the edge of the board near those nifty plastic gears and slide it towards the edge until it pops out from under the clip by the barcode. Easy peasy!
– When it’s time to put things back together, slide the board back under its clip and make sure those alignment pegs next to the screws are lined up just right. You’ve got this!
Step 23
– Ready to put your device back together? Just follow these steps in reverse, and you’ll be all set!
