How to Replace iPad 3G LCD – Step-by-Step Guide
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 24 Steps
Heads up! Before diving into this repair adventure, make sure you’re in a well-lit space and have all your tools at hand. If you’re feeling a bit lost, no worries! You can always schedule a repair and let the pros handle it!
Step 1
Don those safety glasses to keep your peepers safe, and watch out for that precious LCD screen—it’s more fragile than it looks!
– Got a cracked display glass? No worries! Just to keep things in check and avoid any accidental ouchies during your repair, slap some tape over that glass.
– Grab some clear packing tape and lay down overlapping strips over your iPad’s display until it’s all snugly covered.
– Now, dive into the rest of the guide as best as you can. Just a heads-up: once the glass starts to break, it might want to keep cracking while you work. If that happens, don’t stress! A metal prying tool can help you scoop out the glass like a pro.
Step 2
The iPad in the pictures might have a slightly different look than yours, but don’t worry—the steps are exactly the same!
– Slide a metal spudger into the gap between the right edge of the display assembly and the rear panel assembly. You’re doing great!
– Gently twist the spudger away from you to pop those tabs loose along the top edge of the display. Keep it up!

Step 4
Be super careful as you get close to the top edge of the iPad. The digitizer ribbon cable is hiding out near the rear panel’s edge, and it’s a bit of a delicate friend that can get easily damaged.
– Keep gently prying the display assembly away from the rear panel, working your way along the bottom and left edges of the iPad. You’re doing great!
Step 5
Be careful not to hoist the display assembly too high off the iPad! There’s a delicate antenna cable with barely any slack keeping the two parts together, and we wouldn’t want it to feel lonely.
Step 6
– Gently slide the flat end of a spudger under the antenna connector that’s closest to the bottom of the iPad and carefully lift it off its socket on the communications board. You’re doing great!
Step 7
– Get ready to tackle this! In the upcoming steps, you’ll be disconnecting three cables that link the display assembly to the logic board. These cables are responsible for a few important components, so let’s make sure we handle them with care!
Step 8
Just a friendly reminder: make sure you’re lifting the retaining flap and not the socket itself. You’ve got this!
– Gently slide the edge of your trusty iPod opening tool under the retaining flaps and give them a little lift to release the digitizer ribbon cables from their cozy spots on the logic board.
– Now, just pull those digitizer ribbon cables straight out of their sockets like you’re pulling a ribbon from a gift—smooth and steady!
Step 9
– Grab your trusty iPod opening tool and gently lift the ambient light sensor connector out of its socket by prying upward. You’ve got this!
Step 10
Gently slide the connector out, keeping it parallel to the surface of the logic board. You’ve got this!
– Gently flip up the metal retainer using its black plastic pull tab to release the display data cable from the main board. You’re doing great!
– Carefully pull the cable connector away from its socket. Easy peasy!
Step 11
– Gently detach the display assembly from the rear panel assembly. You’ve got this!
Step 12
If needed, go ahead and gently peel the foam tape off the ambient light sensor. You’ve got this!
– There’s no need to totally ditch the foam tape on the antenna—just give it a little nudge and you’re good to go!
Step 13
If you need to, go ahead and pop that plastic view window onto your shiny new ambient light sensor before you dive into the installation. You’ve got this!
– Grab your trusty iPod opening tool and gently wiggle it around the edge to loosen the ambient light sensor board from the sticky adhesive that’s holding it tight against the display frame.
– Once you’ve created a bit of space, carefully peel the ambient light sensor away from the LCD. You’ve got this!
Step 16
– Grab the edge of your trusty iPod opening tool and gently coax the antenna away from the adhesive that’s keeping it snugly attached to the top edge of the display. You’ve got this!
Step 17
– Let’s kick things off by unscrewing those three T5 Torx screws that are holding down the clips and LCD brackets. They’re the ones snuggled up in that EMI tape near the home button switch.
– Now, gently peel back the display clip along with its trusty tape from the black plastic display frame. Take your time, it’ll come off smoothly!
– If you’re swapping out the LCD, don’t forget to transfer those little pieces of EMI tape and their clips to the shiny new LCD. It’s all about keeping it together!
Step 19
– Gently peel away that little tape strip holding the antenna lead snug against the LCD. You’re doing great!
Step 20
Handle the LCD with care, folks! It’s made of glass, so let’s keep those bends to a minimum.
– Slide the edge of your trusty iPod opening tool beneath one of the ears attached to the steel LCD frame.
– Give the iPod opening tool a gentle twist to carefully lift the LCD away from the adhesive that’s keeping it snug against the front glass panel.
Step 23
– If your device is still playing hard to get with the front panel, gently peel off the strip of EMI tape located near the ambient light sensor socket.
– If you need to, go ahead and transfer this tape to your shiny new LCD.
– Now, if the tape is already stuck to your LCD and you’re planning to keep it, feel free to skip this step. But if you’re swapping out the LCD, make sure to move that strip of EMI tape over to your new one!
Step 24
– If they’re still looking good, go ahead and move the clips and EMI tape from the bottom of your old LCD to your shiny new one. You’ve got this!
