How to Replace MacBook Pro 15 Optical Drive – DIY Guide

Swap out your SuperDrive for a new one (needs a slim drive).

Step 1

– Press both battery release tabs away from the battery with your fingers and lift it out of the computer. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair

Step 2

– Grab your trusty screwdriver and unfasten the three Phillips screws from the memory door.

– Remember to keep track of where each screw came from. This will be super helpful when putting everything back together.

Step 3

– Gently lift the memory door up and give it a little nudge in your direction while pulling it away from the casing.

Step 4

– Unscrew those two Phillips screws hanging out in the battery compartment by the latch. You’ve got this!

Step 5

– Time to get your screwdriver ready! Let’s tackle those 6 screws and get this repair party started!

Step 6

– Let’s kick things off by removing those four Phillips screws on the port side of your computer.

Step 7

– Spin the computer around like a DJ and give those two Phillips screws in the back a loving twist to set them free.

Step 8

– Give your computer a little twist and turn it 90 degrees once more. Now, let’s tackle those four Phillips screws on the side and get them out of the way!

Step 9

– Start by gently lifting the back of the case and let your fingers dance along the sides, releasing the case as you go. Once the sides are free, give the case a little rock up and down to help loosen the front of the upper case. This part can be a bit of a puzzle, so don’t worry if it takes a moment. Just remember, there are four tabs above the DVD reader that need to be pulled out vertically.

– Keep an eye out for the two tiny tongues on the left front of the upper case – they might want to bend a little while you’re removing it. When it’s time to put everything back together, just give them a gentle nudge to fit snugly into the grooves of the lower case.

Step 10

– Get ready to disco by disconnecting the trackpad and keyboard ribbon cable from the logic board, gently remove any tape if needed.

– It’s time to unveil the upper case, give it a gentle lift to reveal what’s beneath.

Step 11

– Unplug the orange SuperDrive ribbon cable from the logic board, peeling off any tape as needed.

Step 12

– To kick things off, let’s tackle these 3 screws:

– – You’ve got this, time to remove:

– – Ready, set, unscrew!

Step 13

– Gently lift the optical drive out of the computer, like you’re giving it a little hug goodbye!

Step 14

– Gently unplug the orange ribbon cable from the optical drive. You’ve got this!

Step 15

– Unscrew the two shiny Phillips screws that are keeping the mounting bracket snug on the left side of the optical drive. You’re doing great!

Step 16

– Give that drive a little spin and unscrew the two Phillips screws that are holding the mounting bracket snugly against the back of the optical drive. You’ve got this!

Step 17

– Give that drive a little spin and unscrew the lone Phillips screw that’s keeping the mounting bracket snug on the right side of the optical drive. Easy peasy!

– Got an optical drive without those handy mounting brackets? No worries! Just grab the three shiny metal brackets and the orange ribbon cable from your old drive and pop them onto your new one. You’ve got this!
