Step 1
Handle with care! When working with the power supply, avoid touching the capacitor leads or exposed solder joints on the back. Instead, grip the board by the edges to prevent any damage or electrical shock. Let’s get this repair done safely and efficiently!
Now that the hinge can move freely, the iMac might wobble around like it’s on a caffeine rush, making it a bit tricky to work on. You can totally manage like this, but let’s be real—it’s way smoother and quicker if you use a service wedge to keep things steady.
Got a cardboard service wedge? Cool, follow these steps to assemble it like a pro, and you’ll have a sturdy setup in no time.
– Before diving into your iMac adventure, make sure to unplug it and give that power button a long press for ten seconds. This little move helps clear out the capacitors and ensures you’re starting off on the right foot!
Step 2
The hub on your iMac Opening Tool is there to make sure you don’t push the wheel in too far. If you’re using something else, keep it to no more than 3/8″ into the display. Otherwise, you might accidentally damage some antenna cables—definitely not what you want.
Take it easy! If you pry too hard, the glass could crack. If the room’s a bit chilly, use a hairdryer to warm up the edges and loosen the tape—makes things a whole lot smoother.
– Let’s get started! Begin by locating the gap between the glass panel and the rear enclosure on the left side of the display, near the power button. Carefully insert the iMac Opening Tool into this gap to begin the process.
Step 3
Always push the handle behind the cutting wheel—trust us, it works way better! If you pull, there’s a good chance the wheel might pop out of the handle, and we definitely don’t want that.
– Think of the tool as a pizza cutter—just roll it through the gap, and watch it slice right through that foam adhesive like a pro.
– Slide the tool up along the left side of the display, making sure to keep it steady for a smooth cut.
Step 4
– Keep gliding the tool smoothly up and along the top left corner—you’re almost there!
Step 5
– Slice through the adhesive at the top left corner of the display with confidence.
Step 6
– Keep working your way along the top of the display—steady hands, you’re doing great!
– Give that tool a little workout! Run it back and forth through the areas you’ve already cut a few times to make sure you’ve conquered as much of the adhesive as possible.
Step 7
– Gently work the tool around the top right corner of the display. Take your time—no need to rush here. You got this!
Step 8
– Now it’s time to get this repair rolling – literally! Carefully wheel the tool down along the right side of the display.
Step 9
Alright, now glide that tool all the way around the screen like you’re drawing a perfect circle—this helps cut through as much of the adhesive as possible.
– Keep pushing that opening tool down to the bottom of the right side of the display. You’ve got this!
Step 10
Watch out! Don’t shove that plastic card in more than 3/8″ deep, or you might accidentally mess up some important parts inside.
While the opening tool has tackled most of that pesky adhesive, the display might still be hanging on a bit to the case. Grab a plastic card to gently loosen the last stubborn bits of it!
– Place the iMac screen-side up on a sturdy table. You’ve got this!
– Begin at the top right corner of the iMac and gently slide a plastic card between the display and the frame. Just a little nudge, and you’ll be on your way!
Step 11
– Gently give that plastic card a little twist to create a cozy space between the display and the frame.
– Take it slow and steady—no need to put too much pressure on that display glass! Just aim for a gap of about 1/4″.
Step 12
Take a breather before you reach the iSight camera—going too far could lead to some unintentional damage. Keep it safe and sound!
– Gently glide the card towards the middle of the screen to slice through any stubborn adhesive lingering in the top right corner of your iMac. You’ve got this!
Step 13
– Now, carefully wedge that plastic card into the top right corner one more time, and hold it in place – this will prevent the adhesive from re-sticking and making your life more difficult.
Step 14
– Slide a second plastic card into the cheerful little gap nestled between the display and frame at the top left corner of your iMac. Let’s keep this repair adventure rolling!
Step 15
Just like on the other side, gently twist to give that stubborn adhesive some time to part ways. Remember, we want to treat that display glass with care – no need to push it to its limits!
– Carefully lift the card upward, creating a little more room between the display and the frame.
Step 16
– Gently glide that trusty plastic card toward the center, but remember to pause just before you reach that iSight camera. You’re doing great!
Step 17
– Slide that trusty plastic card back into the top left corner like a pro!
Step 18
Remember, just gently lift the display a tad—it’s still plugged into the logic board with data and power cables, so don’t go too wild!
If you encounter any sections that seem to be playing hard to get and won’t budge, take a breather from twisting and grab one of those cards to slice through the stubborn adhesive.
– With both plastic cards snugly inserted near the corners, give them a gentle twist sideways to carefully widen the gap between the display and the case.
– Start lifting the top of the display away from the frame, taking your time to ensure everything stays in place.
Tools Used
Step 19
Carefully lift the display just enough to access the connector easily—shoot for around 8 inches. Don’t overdo it; stretching the cables will only lead to bad vibes (and stressed connections).
– With one hand holding the display steady, use your other hand to gently unplug the display power cable. Be sure to pull the cable from the plastic tab, not by tugging on the colored wires themselves. We want to keep things in one piece!
Step 20
Make sure to gently pull the display data cable connector straight out of its socket, no yanking or twisting!
– Grab the tip of your trusty spudger and gently nudge up the metal retaining bracket on the display data cable—it’s like giving it a little wake-up call.
– Now, with ninja-like precision, ease the display data cable out of its socket on the logic board. Go slow—this is delicate stuff!

Step 21
There’s still a strip of adhesive along the bottom edge of the display, acting like a hinge to keep it attached to the frame. To loosen it, gently wiggle the display up and down a few times—think of it as giving the adhesive a little workout.
– Tilt the display upward into an almost-upright stance.
Step 22
Handle with care! Steer clear of those capacitor leads and any exposed solder joints on the back of the power supply (highlighted in red).
If an adhesive strip snaps before you’ve pulled it off, grab a plastic card and glide it gently through the leftover adhesive like a pro.
– Let’s get started! Grab the small tab at the end of one of the bottom edge display adhesive strips and gently pull the adhesive toward the top of the iMac to remove it.
– Now, repeat the same step with the other adhesive strip – just grasp the tab and pull it towards the top to remove it.
Step 23
Handle that display with care—it’s large, heavy, and made of glass. Stay sharp, you’ve got this!
– Gently lift the display away from the frame and detach it from the iMac.
– You might want to take it easy and lift from one side to carefully peel it away from any stubborn adhesive.

– Gently nudge the metal retaining bracket on the camera cable down with the tip of your trusty spudger. You’ve got this!

Make sure to only detach the camera connector— the microphone connector is on a different branch of the cable. You’ve got this!
– Carefully wiggle the camera cable and gently pull it straight down from its cozy socket on the camera board.
Step 26
– Gently unplug the microphone connector from its snug little spot on the camera board.
Step 27
– Gently use the tip of a spudger to lift the metal retaining bracket that holds the camera cable connector securely to the logic board. You’ve got this!

Be super gentle with this connector—it’s a bit of a diva and can snap easily! When you’re ready to detach it, just remember to carefully pull it straight out, keeping it parallel to the logic board. You got this!
– Gently unplug the camera cable by pulling it straight out from its connector on the logic board—no need to wrestle with it!
Step 29
If you have trouble peeling the cable from the rear enclosure, use a spudger to help pry it free.
