iMac Intel 21.5″ EMC 2805 iSight Camera and Microphone Cable Replacement
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 28 Steps
Let’s get that iSight camera and microphone cable swapped out! No worries, we’ll take it step by step. Stay calm, and let’s make your device feel brand new again!
Step 1
Handle with care! When working with the power supply, avoid touching the capacitor leads or exposed solder joints on the back. Instead, grip the board by the edges to prevent any damage or electrical shock. Let’s get this repair done safely and efficiently!
With the hinge freed up, your iMac might feel a bit wobbly—kind of like trying to work on a seesaw. Using an iMac service wedge makes this repair smoother than butter, but if you don’t have one, no worries—you can totally handle it without.
If you’ve got your hands on the cardboard service wedge, check out these easy assembly steps to get it set up in no time.
– Alright, before you dive into working on your iMac, make sure it’s completely powered down and unplugged. Then, hold down the power button for about ten seconds to safely discharge those capacitors in the power supply. Safety first, always!
Step 2
The hub on the iMac Opening Tool is there to stop you from pushing the wheel in too far. If you’re using a different tool, don’t insert more than 3/8″ into the display. Going beyond that could cut through antenna cables and cause some serious damage. Stay cautious and keep it safe!
– Begin on the left side of the display, right by the power button. Gently slide the iMac Opening Tool into the small gap between the glass panel and the rear enclosure.
Step 3
When using the cutting wheel, remember to push, don’t pull! This will help keep the wheel securely in place and make the process much smoother. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair
– Think of the tool like a pizza cutter—just roll it along the gap, and watch it slice right through the foam adhesive, nice and steady.
– Glide the tool up the left side of the display like you’re tracing a line—smooth and easy does it!
Step 4
– Keep guiding the tool up and around that top-left corner—you’re almost there!
Step 5
– Slice through the adhesive at the top left of the display.
Step 6
Try running the tool back and forth over the area you’ve already cut a few times—this will help separate as much of the adhesive as possible. Keep at it, you’re doing great!
– Keep cruising along the top edge of the display—you’re doing great!
Step 7
– Slide the tool around the top-right corner of the screen like a pro. Keep it smooth and steady—you’ve got this!
Step 8
– Gently glide the tool down the right side of the display, giving it a little love as you go!
Step 9
Alright, now glide that tool all the way around the screen like you’re drawing a perfect circle—this helps cut through as much of the adhesive as possible.
– Almost there! Keep pushing that opening tool all the way to the bottom of the right side of the display.
Step 10
Keep it cool and slide that plastic card no deeper than 3/8″—going further might mess with the delicate stuff inside.
The opening tool did an awesome job cutting through most of the adhesive, but there’s still a little clinginess between the display and the case. Grab yourself a trusty plastic card to finish the job and set the display free!
– Let’s get that iMac set up, face-up, on a sturdy table. You’ve got this!
– Starting at the top right corner of your iMac, gently slide a plastic card between the display and the frame. Easy does it!
Step 11
– Carefully shimmy the plastic card side-to-side to sneak a gap between the screen and frame.
– No need to rush—take it easy and keep the display glass happy. Aim for a cozy gap of about 1/4 inch.
Step 12
Pause right before reaching the iSight camera—no need to accidentally turn it into a sad little casualty.
– Gently glide the card toward the center of the display to slice through any remaining adhesive holding down the top right corner of your iMac. Smooth moves, you’re almost there!
Step 13
– Slide that plastic card back into the top right corner like a pro, and leave it there to keep the adhesive from pulling a sneak attack and sticking again.
Step 14
– Slide another plastic card into the gap between the screen and the frame, aiming near the top left corner of your iMac. Smooth moves, you’re doing great!
Step 15
Just like on the other side, take it slow and give the adhesive time to loosen up. Keep it chill—no need to stress the display glass too much.
– Give the card a gentle twist upward to widen the gap a tad between the display and the frame. Easy does it—you’re doing great!
Step 16
– Gently slide the plastic card toward the center, but be sure to stop just before reaching the iSight camera. No need to rush, you’re doing great!
Step 17
– Gently slide the plastic card back into the top left corner. A little nudge goes a long way!
Step 18
Careful now! Just lift the display a smidge—the data and power cables are still hugging the logic board.
If you hit a spot that’s being stubborn and won’t budge, ease up on the twisting and grab one of the cards to slice through the sticky adhesive instead.
– Slide both plastic cards into the corners as shown, then give them a little twist to open up the gap between the display and the case—like you’re a magician revealing a hidden compartment.
– Gently start lifting the top of the display away from the frame. No need to rush; slow and steady wins this repair race.

Step 19
Gently slide that display data cable connector straight out of its socket—no twists or turns, keep it smooth and steady!
– Grab those trusty tweezers and gently pop up the little metal clip holding the display data cable in place—think of it as giving it a friendly nudge.
– Now, carefully slide the display data cable out of its socket on the logic board, like you’re unplugging a delicate little phone handshake. Take it slow and steady!

Step 20
Lift that display up just enough to get a good look at the connector – about 8 inches should do the trick. Be careful not to pull it up too high, or you might put some unnecessary stress on those cables and their connections.
– Hold that display up with one hand like a pro, then smoothly unplug the display power cable with your other hand. Easy does it!
Step 21
Now, there’s still a strip of sticky adhesive along the bottom of the display acting like a hinge to hold it to the frame. To loosen things up, gently work the display up and down a few times—it’s like giving it a little stretch!
– Tilt the display upward into an almost-upright stance.
Step 22
Hey, steer clear of touching the capacitor leads or any bare solder joints on the back of the power supply (marked in red). Trust me, it’s a no-go zone!
If the adhesive strip decides to break before you’re done, grab a plastic card and gently slice through the leftover adhesive to keep things moving smoothly.
– Grab hold of the little tab at the end of one of the display adhesive strips along the bottom edge. Give it a steady pull towards the top of the iMac and voilà—off it comes!
– Do the same thing with the other adhesive strip, and just like that, you’re good to go!
Step 23
Handle the display with care—it’s large, heavy, and made of glass, so treat it like the delicate masterpiece it is!
– Gently lift the display up from the frame and take it off the iMac—easy does it!
– You might need to slowly lift from one side to peel away the stubborn adhesive—patience is key here.
– If you’re swapping out the display for a new one, some components might need to hitch a ride from the old display to the new one.
– When putting it all back together, be sure to check out the display adhesive guide to stick on that fresh adhesive like a pro.
Step 24
– Grab a pair of tweezers and carefully lift the metal retaining bracket, then gently flip it down to release the iSight camera cable connector. Easy does it!

Step 25
Hold up! Don’t yank that cable just yet—you’ve still got the microphone branch of it to unhook.
– Carefully tug the iSight camera cable straight down and out of its cozy home on the camera board. You’ve got this!
Step 26
– Gently pull the microphone cable connector straight down from its cozy spot in the camera board socket. You’ve got this!
Step 27
Handle this connector with care! It’s a bit fragile, so take your time when disconnecting and reconnecting the cable. You got this!
– Time to get a grip – literally! Use a trusty pair of tweezers to carefully grasp and flip up that metal retaining bracket, and you’ll be freeing the iSight camera cable connector from the logic board in no time.
– Now, gently pull the iSight camera cable straight out from its connector on the logic board. You’re making great progress!
