Install Ubuntu 16 on the Pixel

Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 4 Steps

Ready to give your Chromebook Pixel a fresh start with Ubuntu Linux? This guide walks you through the setup without messing with your BIOS—no flashing required. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to tinker with the BIOS later on, like removing the Write-Protect screw or flashing, just remember you’re in charge of your own tech destiny!

Step 1

– Activate Developer Mode/Legacy Boot

– No need to flash your BIOS, we’re sticking with the stock SeaBIOS. Simple, right?

– It might take a little while, so feel free to grab a coffee or take a quick break!

– From now on, just press ‘ctrl’ + ‘L’ every time you boot up, and you’ll be good to go.

Step 2

– Unlike Windows, you won’t need a USB keyboard or mouse to kickstart the OS—just sit back and let the computer do its thing.

– When you power up, pick your USB installer drive from the boot menu—easy peasy.

– And voilà! You should see the welcoming Ubuntu startup screen waving hello.

Step 3

– Before moving on, make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi. It’ll help grab all those important drivers you need.

– Just walk through the installer like you would with any other software – no surprises here!

– The Wi-Fi card will automatically pop up when you boot up, no extra effort needed.

Step 4

– All set! If you ever want to switch back to ChromeOS, just make a recovery drive using your Chrome browser and turn secure boot back on when starting up your Pixel. If things get tricky or you want a hand, you can always schedule a repair.

Success!
