iPhone 11 Series Non-Genuine Screen Warning/Important Display Message – 100% Fix
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 6 Steps
This repair is on the pro level and calls for some unique tools and skills. Ready to roll up your sleeves?
Get ready to dive into a professional-level repair! Replacing the display on your iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max isn't a walk in the park, but with the right tools and a bit of skill, you can tackle it like a pro. Apple's tight-knit hardware-software duo means that displays installed by authorized technicians are the only ones that will function perfectly. If you've ever seen that pesky "Important Display Message" after a trip to a third-party repair shop or after swapping in a non-genuine screen, you know what we're talking about. This message can put a damper on features like auto-brightness and True Tone since Apple’s diagnostic software picks up on the non-original display. To bypass this restriction, you'll need some advanced skills to open up the phone and reprogram the microcontroller chip. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! This guide will lead you through the installation of a new display while keeping everything fully functional. We’ll be covering: the tools you’ll need like an SPI flasher and soldering iron to access that sneaky EEPROM chip, how to safely disassemble the phone without a scratch, reading and backing up the original EEPROM data, reprogramming the microcontroller to bring back True Tone, transferring display components from the old screen, and making sure the new display is all set and ready to go. It might sound complex, but stick with this guide and you’ll be replacing your iPhone 11 series screen while keeping all the original features intact. Ready to roll? Let’s start by gathering those essential tools and parts!
Step 1
Heads up! If you're doing a third-party screen swap, you might see an important message pop up. Don't worry, this has nothing to do with the screen you’re putting in, whether it's a third-party or original. Just a little heads up, nothing to stress about!
- Uh-oh! Looks like your phone's screen has thrown in the towel and is being all unresponsive and damaged. No worries, we’re here to bring it back to life with a shiny new screen! First things first, let's pop open that phone and gently remove the old screen.
- Once you've got that old screen out of the way, it's time to install the new OEM screen. Go ahead and press the power button to fire up your phone. If all goes well, you'll see the Important Display Message pop up, and just like that, your phone is on the mend!
Step 2
- Wondering why your iPhone 11 series shows a Display Repair Warning? It’s because the system checks the touch module data during startup. Since the touch module sits on the back of the screen, swapping out the screen can cause the data to mismatch with the phone.
- The best way to fix this right now is to carefully solder the original screen’s touch module onto the new replacement screen.
- Keep in mind, traditional desoldering tools can easily mess up the screen since the touch module is on its back. So, today we’re using a cool new chip grinding tool to get the job done safely.
Step 3
Take your time while grinding—start with the top layer before moving down, and watch out for those flex cables nearby so they don’t get hurt!
- Wrap high-temperature tape around the touch module on your replacement screen to keep things safe, then cover the whole screen with protective film.
- Next up, grab that electric chip grinding tool and carefully grind down the touch module.
- Once you see the solder joints starting to show, pause your grinding. Then clean the bonding pad using a cotton swab soaked in PCB Cleaner to get it spotless.
Step 4
- Time to transfer the touch module from the original screen and solder it onto your new replacement screen. Let’s do this!
- First, remove the earpiece speaker and sensor flex cable from the original screen. Slide a piece of paper under the touch flex cable for protection. Warm things up with a Hot Air Gun, then carefully pry off the touch module.
- Next, apply some low-temp solder paste to the touch module. Use your soldering iron set at 365℃ to clean off any leftover solder paste and black adhesive. Follow up by thoroughly cleaning with solder wick, then finish with PCB cleaner for a spotless result.
- Finally, get that touch module reballed and ready to shine!
Step 5
- Alright, time to solder that reballing-finished touch module onto the replacement screen.
- Before you start soldering, slide a pry tool under the touch flex cable. A little splash of alcohol here helps things go smoothly. We’re using the metal plate and paper as a heat shield to protect the screen from getting too toasty during soldering.
- Next, spread some paste flux onto the bonding pad. Line up the touch module just right, then fire up the Hot Air Gun and solder it in place.
Step 6
- Heads up: tackling motherboard repairs calls for some solid professional skills and steady hands. If this sounds a bit much, no worries—you can always schedule a repair and let the pros handle it!
