Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Battery Replacement
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 9 Steps
Ready to give your Surface Pro 3 a little battery TLC? This guide will walk you through the process of safely removing that battery. We’ll kick things off by taking off the screen and digitizer, and then we’ll dive right into the battery removal. Let’s get started!
Step 1
Before diving in, make sure to drain that Surface Pro’s battery to below 25%. A fully charged lithium-ion battery can be a bit of a drama queen and might catch fire or even explode if it gets a little too much love during the repair.
Take it easy with the heat gun! Too much heat can turn your display and/or battery into a hot mess. Keep it cool, and you’ll do just fine!
The display is really stuck to the device’s frame, so be prepared for a bit of a challenge!
– To get that display off, let’s start by loosening up the adhesive with a little heat magic. Grab a heat pad, heat gun, or iOpener to work your wonders. If you’re in a bind, a hair dryer can do the trick too!
– Gently warm up the edges of the display until it’s too hot to handle, and keep that cozy temperature going for a few minutes. You’ve got this!
Step 2
Handle with care—this glass is delicate and can crack if you apply too much pressure.
The wi-fi antennas are snugly glued beneath the screen’s top edge (right by the camera), so be gentle when prying it apart. If you find it tricky, a little extra heat can work wonders!
Got yourself in a situation with a gnarly cracked screen? No worries! Suction cups can act like they’re too cool for school when it comes to sticking to heavily cracked displays. Try giving it a makeover with some packing tape to make it more clingy, or get creative and use a dab of superglue to stick that suction cup right onto the display.
– Grab a suction cup or an iSclack and gently pull up on the glass to create a small gap between it and the metal frame—just enough to get started.
– Take your trusty opening pick and slide it carefully into the gap between the screen and the device, working it through the adhesive.
– Glide the pick along the edges and bottom of the display to loosen up the adhesive. If things get stubborn, don’t hesitate to apply a bit more heat for extra help.
Step 3
Be careful when handling the screen, it’s super thin and can break easily. We want you to stay safe while you’re fixing your device, so take your time and be gentle with that fragile glass!
– Warm up sections of the screen with the heat gun—it’s all about keeping it nice and toasty.
– While you’re making your way around the screen with the heat gun, grab the plastic opening tool and those trusty opening picks to gently pry the screen free. Take it slow and steady!

Step 4
– Gently lift the screen, taking care not to damage any wires. You’ve got this!
Step 5
Watch out for that little rectangular bridge connector hiding underneath! It’s a tiny treasure you definitely don’t want to misplace.
– Unscrew the 3 mm T3 Torx screw that’s holding down the battery connector, and gently unplug that battery connector like a pro!
Step 6
Just a friendly reminder to keep an eye on that tiny, rectangular bridge connector hiding underneath. It’s easy to misplace, so let’s make sure it stays safe and sound!
– First up, let’s tackle that sneaky little 4 mm T3 Torx screw holding down the display cable. Go ahead and remove it!
– Now, gently lift the connector to disconnect that cable. You’re doing great!
Step 7
– Grab that orange cable connected to the shiny silver connector with confidence!
– Gently lift the orange cable upwards until the connector gives a little pop and comes off.
– Congratulations! The screen is now completely free.
– Just a heads up: the replacement display might not come with all the necessary parts for installation. Be sure to keep all the components from the original display and transfer them to the new one as needed.
Step 8
Using the Metal Spudger might lead to an unexpected battery poke! For a safer bet, grab that trusty plastic card to gently lift the battery out.
You’ll find that the battery is held in place with quite a bit of adhesive. So, take a deep breath and gently work your spudger around the edges of the battery to loosen all that sticky stuff.
– Grab that trusty metal spudger and gently pry up the battery from the device – slow and steady does the trick!
