Lenovo Helix 2 Keyboard Teardown
Duration: 45 minutes
Steps: 5 Steps
Take apart the keyboard pro to reveal the keyboard assembly. This is great for switching out the keyboard or just sneaking a peek at the inner workings of the keyboard dock!
Step 1
– Grab a pen and some paper—you’ll want to keep track of where each screw comes from (there are 30+ in all sorts of sizes).
– Sketch out a quick diagram as you go, so you know exactly which screw goes back where. Reassembly isn’t covered here, so your notes are your best friend.
– Take a moment to read through all the steps before you start taking things apart.
– If things go sideways, that’s on you—so take your time!
– Ordering a replacement keyboard? Make sure it comes with the metal backplate. The backplate is glued to the plastic cover, which is then glued to the keyboard frame. This keeps all the important bits (like switches and backlight) in place. Check the last step for some visuals.
– There’s a video guide coming as well, so keep an eye out for that.
Step 2
– Tilt the tablet all the way to its maximum angle—it’s like yoga for your device! This will make the next steps much smoother.
– Unplug the tablet and disconnect every cable (USB, Display, mains) from the dock. Keep it clean and simple!
– Remove the 8 screws from the back of the keyboard dock and place them on a drawing of the dock’s back—get creative and make it snazzy!
– Carefully start prying open the keyboard dock at the top near the hinges. You can use just your fingers—it’s surprisingly easy!
– Avoid bending it too far; instead, pry open the bottom as well to keep it chill.
– Set the back cover aside for now—your workspace just got an upgrade!
Step 3
– First things first, unplug that battery connector from the controller board.
– Now, let’s get to the bottom of things! You’ll find two stickers holding those audio wires snugly in place—time to peel them off.
– Next up, grab your trusty screwdriver and take out the 5 screws securing the battery pack (2 in the center and 3 around it). Make sure to place them on a sketch of the battery pack so you know where they go later!
– Gently lift out the battery pack, and keep in mind how those speaker wires were tucked in at the bottom.
– If you’re swapping out the battery, congrats! You’re all set. Just retrace your steps and put everything back together. If you need help, you can always schedule a repair.
Step 4
– Carefully unplug all the connectors from the board, except the large one in the top-left corner (the dock <-> tablet connector). You don’t need to worry about that one – just leave it in place.
– Unscrew the four screws from the board as shown in the drawing.
– Next, remove the two screws from the hinges.
– Now, gently remove the board and hinge assembly as a single piece and set it aside.
Step 5
– Sketch out your keyboard layout—trust me, future you will thank you.
– Remove all the screws around the keyboard (and yes, place them on your sketch!).
– No need for detective work here—the keyboard assembly might *look* like two separate parts (keyboard + metal backplate), but they’re stuck together like best friends.
– Pop in the new keyboard assembly and work your way backward through the steps to put everything back together (seriously, you made that sketch for a reason, right?).
– Check out the last images: on the right, you’ve got the full keyboard assembly, and on the left, the spare keyboard I ordered. Heads-up—one of them is flipped 180 degrees (watch the videos for a better comparison).
– The metal plate is attached to the black plastic part of the keyboard, and separating them is a *no-go*. I tried heat, I tried cutting—both ended in a deformed mess. So, if you’re tackling this repair, get the version that includes the metal backplate!
